Roland Cube 60
« on: September 21, 2008, 12:54:40 AM »
I had a band practice to day at our local rooms, and the owner has recently put some new kit in them. Namely new amps.

Before, each room had 2 Laney half stacks, so I was surprised today when we went in and in place of the Laneys there were 2 tiny Roland Cube amps. I was a bit sceptical, being that when we rehearse we really make a noise.

But, never one to criticise without an informed opinion, I kept an open mind and plugged in...OH. MY. GOD.

I had it set to the recto setting and was blown away, had it at just less than half volume and it was having no trouble matching our drummer. The sound was huge! It had phenomenal clarity and definition and I must say I was completely bowled over. I handed my axe to our new guitarist and i picked up the Bass. We turned the setting to one of the clean amps and he started playing Sultans of swing. It was tone perfect. The cleans were crystal clear, sparkling.

I've seen this amp online for around £150 brand new. I think most players would be foolish NOT to have one in their collection at this price, I can honestly say I've never seen a bargain that good.

We didn't get to play around with the other sounds and settings as we were pushed for time, but even if only the 2 settings we used were available on the model, for the sound quality I think it's still a bargain.

Now, looking at the quality of the product and then the price, one has to ask:
What's the catch?

Must admit I can't see a catch meself. Two or three people I used to teach had one (think one was a 30) and they were quite impressive. I love me valves, but if for some reason I had to get a tranny amp it'd be one o them. I spose cos it's not valve, isn't handwired and hasn't got marshall on the front, people don't consider em  :?

I had the 60 for a few months earlier this year as  backup amp, and I felt it was a great low volume, practice tool (even has a headphones out) but could not cut it when cranked at all with a band. I felt it was the speaker/cab's fault really though, not the amp.
Surely, at that budget, for low volume, it's probably hard to beat, but in the end, I got rid of it because the thought of actually having to use it at a gig depressed me.
I'm surprised you liked it so much, actually playing with a full band.

There is no catch in my opinion. I have a 20x and absolutely love it. Great tone and quality for such a low priced amp. You just can't go wrong.

Me too, heh. I mean it's still not going to beat an Engl Powerball or anything but for sound authenticity it models amps very well. Maybe not quite a gig amp but I would definitely use a Cube if I needed an emergency replacement. In fact my other guitarist said that he might sell his Marshall combo and buy one of these he was that impressed.
