Who does refrets?

Who is good to go to in the UK for refrets?  Possibly stainless steel.

We do them - ask Johnny Mac!

Stainless refrets are more expensive because the wire completely kills your tools and is very hard work on the repairman too.
The wire is very hard and more brittle than the more maleable nickel silver wire - we typically use the Jim Dunlop suff

Thanks!  I might just go with Nic-Silv!  I bought a Tusq nut but haven't installed it yet.  If I were to get new frets and have the nut installed, would I need to send the whole guitar or could I send just the neck, as I'm in Belfast!

I've seen a lot of Feline's fretwork at LGS a year or so ago. Was looking to get my 7 refretted, and Doug (Blackmachine) reccomended Jonathan. Only the fact of living at the wrong end of the country stopped me getting it done by him. In 30 years of being seriously interested in guitars I have never seen finer fretwork, occasionally equal to, but never better.

I sent Jon a neck for a refret and to get it scalloped from the 13th fret.  It came back perfect, so you can definately go this way.  However, if you can send the whole guitar, he will be able to do a full setup when he finishes the refret.  I have all the tools and years of experience in setting up my guitars, so was able to do that myself.  I'm still not into doing a refret, though I have an old Silvertone Roy Smeck in pieces that I might try to refret (half the frets are missing and all the binding is gone!).
So many pickups, so little time

if you don't want to post it to feline, there's a guy out near(ish) antrim who did a refret for me a while back, he did a good job (and he was pretty cheap too). i think one of the other guys on here went to him too- can't remember if it was blue or headtheball (d'oh sorry  ), if you want a second opinion.

not trying to lose feline any business or anything, just it might be handier than having to post a guitar, and less risk of its being damaged in the post etc.

I'm afraid with going with stainless steel it may change my tone a lot.  Is this the case + can anyone comment on how it changes the tone?

Hi,
have a blast thru a parker fly - they have ss frets as far as i remember. They dont have the same buttery feel that super polished nickel silver does, but they have their own thing - its personal choice like everything else i guess.
this week I've just refretted a beaut old lp custom and a taylor, I was expecting the lp to be the more difficult (chippy fret boards are the main issue when re-fretting in my book) but the taylor was far worse. Still, both worked out fine.

Its a great opportunity to have the fret board re-radiused if it isn't quite the way you'd like it, or just tidied up (the lp radius was all over the place) or have the shoulders slightly rounded etc. I've found that once customers realised they can have a cutom shaped neck to fit their hand (f-board and back of neck) - and they try it out - they want all their non-vintage stuff done. I did it to my own strat years ago and there's nothing quite like it!

Feline's work looks fantastic, if posting the neck alone there's pretty much zero chance of any damage in transit,
all the best,
steve
