Anyone else addicted to...
« on: November 14, 2008, 03:26:49 PM »
...playing in a band?

I'm really struggling to practice at the minute.  I used to love playing along with CDs at home, but since doing some serious band playing recently I don't enjoy it any more.  My amps don't sound 'right' at home volumes, you don't get that response between guitar & amp and you don't get that band 'vibe' either  :(

I want to pack in work and become a rock n' roll star!  :D

I'm definitely not addicted to playing in a band. Nope. Not at all.

I do miss it, even though I was only playing boring covers before. I'm thinking about joining this metal band that are looking for a 2nd guitarist here even though metal really isnt my thing any more, it'd be fun just to jam with some musicians.

Playing in a band is the only thing that I really love more than anything(Well, most things).
Especially when you're playing with people you connect with.

It is.

The problem is, I recently left the band. The band wanted to do wedding parties and such and more and more non-rock n' roll music entered the setlist and the energy was gone. The local bar that had the monthly music sessions is closed too, so I don't have that either anymore.

I'm suffering from withdrawal.

music becomes an addiction if you ask me...not that anyone is, but just playing with other people & getting that buzz from playing a song & getting it spot on is better than drugs to me

I don't know how I'd cope not playing in a band. Sure there was a time when I wasn't gigging when my kids were small but I fiound myself in a new area and just had to get out an do it. I used to love recording too but only when someone else was twiddling the knobs. Tis true for me that playing with other musicians( and a drummer) keeps me interested in life.

Since I'm Philly-stay-at-home-no-mates, I'll have to take everyone's word for it.

But it makes sense to me that playing with a band is far, far better than playing on your own.  It's all about interacting with other people, isn't it?  And does it really matter if you're not practising at home?  OK, maybe your sweep-picking technique will suffer, but surely you learn far more useful stuff from playing with other musicians.

What about the aspect of playing for an audience?  Presumably that extra pressure (and adulation  :P ) gives even more of a buzz?

I just can't find the time.

Two kids under 6, a job that sucks blood worse than a vampire, and just not enough hours in a day.

The last "project" I was in was an ABBA tribute band a few year back.

God I hate ABBA...

I do love jamming with others but i do seem to find blokes more interested in getting off their faces than really putting the effort in. I still enjoy it though. I did answer an ad on forming bands recently and were sent some mp3s. I learned them in about 3 minutes. Then got a 2nd opinion on them as i wanted them to be ok as it was a chance to do something new. The 2nd op' was the same as my gut feeling. They're cr@p!
I just find it hard to meet other muso's who have the need for a guitar player as thats what everyone wants to do.
