I couldn't agree more. I like seeing people come up with an idea and finding out how it went. I also doubt people buy stuff just to show off - buying an expensive guitar just to show off on an internet forum would be a bit bloody daft. With that said, I think the forum is a great place to share your genuine enthusiasm about a new piece of gear with people who will understand what you're on about, which is what I love about it. Long may it continue.

Same here, I actually prefer those pimped squier type threads because the bling new PRS stuff doesnt interest me at all :)

It is, but I don't doubt for a second there's a lot of that about. Just go have a nose around places like the gear page, I have no doubt at all there's people there just buying gear to try and out do other folk. There are quite a lot of forums where you'll see some young lad excited about his first guitar and showing everybody, just for some arse to come along with "That's rubbish, look, I've got one of THESE!"

And if you take away the internet aspect, there are TONS of people who buy gear just to show off.

But, I don't think people on this forum are guilty of it.

I certainly find it hard to believe anyone would buy anything just to show off on a bulletin board, for starters if you wanted to do that you could just post pictures without buying the kit - after all how could I check if you actually own the stuff shown?

Perhaps what is perceived as "showing off" is actually a more natural human reaction of "I just spanked 2 large on a guitar/amp/whatsamajigger and now I'm thinking that was a lot of money, lets show it to some like minded folk who will hopefully remind me why it was worth it"

I at least have such panics :-)

Regards the general feel around here, there has been a little less patience with new posters asking pickup advice IMO, which is I guess because a lot of the topics (the main one being 'MM or NB for modern metal') have been discussed a lot over the years, and a search of the forum will often yield the answers.

Maybe better information on the product site would help a lot here, say some good user posts about pickups linked off the product pages along with links to threads (or copies of) discussing their usages?

Personally however I have always found this forum very helpful. I have learnt a huge amount form all of you, you caused me to buy a PRS SE and a Tele which I am very happy with; and I now understand intonation, why to use different strings, and endless other stuff that has improved my tone and playing. The opinions posted here are almost all the result of long years of experience, and also clearly separate personal preference from fact - i.e. none of the "Fender suck Gibson rulz" type posts. The fact that this is a relatively small forum helps a lot, as there is less noise - but this also leaves the forum open to a change in feel due to the smaller active demographic. This isn't bad, just human.

Those are the type of threads I really look forward to.

Those and the custom builds that guys on the forum have ordered and then share the story of the "how and why". I love to gain an insight into the reasons behind the individual choices people make and share their sense of excitement / fulfillment.

A human interest story gets me everytime.

I can look at retailers or manufacturers sites for off the shelf "bling" by PRS or other majors.

There is nothing wrong with any polite thread and anyway who has the right to judge what is worthy of anothers interest. 

I personally just don't have as much interest in gear for gears sake as I do in the people / stories behind the gear.

I like to see what other people have bought, its interesting to me and others so why not.

I've learned more from people here than the magazines. Like others have said I value the real opinions of gear and threads with about new gear get the discussions going.  :D

I agree - its nice to see something that some has got warts and all - better than reading about it in a mag.

What is very common on these boards and really annoys me is someone gives a list of things in a certain budget range (say a Bad Monkey, a TS7 or a SD1) for recommendation and and someone else comes along and says 'get this - x3 price boutique item' (like, for example, a Keeley modded TS808).   

If a person has a budget, has gone to the trouble of listing a few items, then recommending the most expensive, latest or most obscure boutique item doesn't really help them.

well, i'm almost new here, so i have no idea of how this forum was a couple of years before i had ever heard of BKP... usually

i'm not a forum fan (once i made a couple of posts on a movie forum just to find myself hated and banned by half the members in the space of 12 hours...  :))... i usually hate italian forums because they're full of WORLDS GREATEST EXPERTS always ready to say the exact opposite of what everyone else is saying just for the sake of it.
here i found a bunch of relaxed people talking about guitars, amps, music, cats and other nice things with no manifest sense of superiority over younger (read less expert or less capable) members... i never read sarcastic or offensive comments about audio clips (well, if you don't like it and if you haven't got anything useful to say except "it sucks big time and you're an asshole" SHUT the hell up and go posting on some other thread!)... jokes about other's tastes are funny and i don't think that anyone can get really offended.

neither i ever read arrogant statements on others' budget or equipment...
of course if you're happy with a guitar you have just bought and think it's one of the prettiest things on earth is nice to post pics and have them commented by other guitar lovers... you can call it childish but i think it's part of the game; one of the funniest parts, actually. of course adding sound clips and "reviews" to new gear annoncements is a good idea... personally i'm trying to do it as much as possible, because it can be useful for others and of course i like to do it  :P

maybe to give some "prestige" back to the place discussion should be much more technical and specific, but where would be the fun?

i'm not answering to anyone in particular, and i don't think to be "part of the problem" (well, uh... i'm not sure... D'OH!, it's just for the sense of discontent i felt in many posts...
it's true, i'm becoming a gear thirsty maniac who actually spends more time reading about guitars than playing them, but at least for me this depends on the ABSOLUTE lack of time (work is killing me) i'm suffering nowadays... and i'm having nice advices, priceless feedback and - last but not least- a good time in here...

But it also shows one of the other things I like about this forum, that there are a lot of like-minded folk on it :-) And where people do disagree, its done in good humour and peoples opinions and feelings are listened to.

Edit: Well, apart from that thread about downtuning. And one about Final Fanatasy ... but vive la difference!

On the subject of it being nice here, my name is Matt BTW, some days I regret the moniker I chose on registration as I always get refered to by the second most depressing score in cricket after a duck :P My own fault of course. I was a bowler, never got past 20! :P
But I did take a double hat-trick once. Admittedly in a school house match where I was the only one with any idea how to bowl, BUT IT STILL COUNTS! I should have written into to Wisden really ...
Anyway, way off topic ... but I always like to sneak a bit of cricket in whenever possible ;-)

i was kind of an all-rounder, not really great at either batting or bowling, but could do either at a pinch if one of the main bowlers was sick, kinda thing (actually i started out as a bowler, but all the opposing batsmen got better, but i never seemed to get any better at bowling :lol: ).

double hat trick is pretty cool, i was on a hat-trick once but never got one... :(

i actually didn't get a duck for ages when i was playing at school, but then when i finally got one, i managed to get about 5 in a row... :lol:
