How much gear do you own, and how much do you actually use?

I'm asking 'coz it seems most guitarists have loads of guitars and a fair few amps... but what do you use on a regular basis?  So, if you could only keep 2 guitars from your collection and 1 amp/ cab/ combo.... what would it be and why?

I have quite an economical gear list, as long as you don't count the full PA that I have a part share in and my recording gear  :)

I use all 3 guitars on a regular basis, as they each give very different tone but if pushed into choosing I would select the LP and Strat - along with my C50.

The SG2000 is the nicest guitar that I own to actually play but I'm still deciding if it needs BKP's in it or not. The stock pickups give a much more modern tone than my LP and Strat, which is odd as it's was made in '79. These days I'm into more vintage type tones, that the BKP's and Lace Sensors on my LP and Strat give me.

Now ... If I were to bite the bullet and put a set of Mule, Abraxas or VHII etc pups on the SG2000 that might change things  :D

Rather embarassingly, I've got 21 guitars at the moment (although 2 are, or will be, up for sale) and 7 amps (either heads or combos).  Sorry  :oops:  All amps have a purpose as I need different tones / volumes for my two bands:

1 combo - home practice
1 head / cab - gigging amp for Doppelganger
1 combo - rehearsal amp for Doppelganger (less hassle going up stairs to rehearsal room!)
1 head - backup amp for Doppelganger / rehearsal amp for YC/DC
1 head / cab - gigging amp for YC/DC
1 head - backup amp for YC/DC (could probably sell this and use my main Doppelganger amp...)
1 combo - old practice amp, now my first attempt at amp 'modding'

Guitar-wise, I have some working ones:

(Main) SG for YC/DC
(Backup) Mira for YC/DC
(Eb) Gordon Smith for Doppelganger
(Floyd Rose) Jackson for Doppelganger
(Fixed bridge) McCarty for Doppelganger

The rest I own just because I love guitars!  They're all different, I play them all (some more than others of course) and I guess I'm a stereotypical collector.

If I could have two guitars and one amp it would be:

* PRS McCarty with one-piece maple top (my absolute #1 guitar from the thread of the same name)
* Fender Custom Shop '58 Heavy Relic Tele (the one in my avatar)
* Martamp Orion Prototype head (I had an influlence on the design, so it's very much 'my' amp)
* Martamp 2x12 Cab (with Celestion Golds)

Major point to add is this - if I had to strip down that much, I'd have to give up gigging with my current bands

I use the Carvin and Gibson constantly through the XT Live. I don't really use the other things. I recently sold my Laney amp because I wanted something different but versatile and have alot of tonal control.

I sold alot of expensive and great stuff (Including PRS, Engl, Rack preamps, custom guitars) because I just want to get down to playing and being the best guitarist I can be, not the guitarist with the most impressive collection.

Absolutely right. I'm some where in the lower end of that spectrum. Where as about 2 years ago, I was on the collector end. Although I could get great tones, I wasn't satisfied and realised it was my playing I wasn't satisfied with, not my tone.

If some one is happy with their playing but has alot of stuff, then more power to them.

When I'm at home I use it all for most of the time, except the wah. I dont bring it to uni though so hardly get to play it during term time All I have here is my Epiphone and Amplitube 2..

If/when I get a new guitar it may replace the Epiphone though as I dont feel it'll get as much time being played. The Pearl allready feels way better than it (epi feels plasticcy and cheap in comparison) and the WezV I hope to get will undoubtedly be much higher quality :)

-Hopefully, I'll be in the market for an Ibanez USA (y'know the graphic ones?)

And I play through Guitar Rig 3 and some decent studio monitors.

I'm waiting on two of the M2s following a couple of trades and stuff, but I'm definitely going to use everything a lot :D

I'm much the same as you Steve.

I've taken a step back and just concentrated on trying to improve my playing over the last year, with decent results.

I've posted clips here that I'm embarressed about now  :(

It's maybe time for some new Emerald clips  :D
