I chose rock, as thats what hair metal is probably classed as now. Stuff like Motley Crue's titty cam is just evidence

Yes......but it won't get you the ladies!  If you want respect from every guitarist in the room, playing at a million notes a minute (whether you like it or not) will get you interest from the guitarists in the room, but your average Joe Public won't be very impressed.

I play acoustic at my gigs, just a Larrivee LV-19E and my voice.......nothing more and nothing less, but in my youger days I did a lot of open mike nights.
One night I was on in this Irish pub, with a couple of other guys warming up prior to going on.  One was this shredder with his backing tracks on his little rig and he was merrily taking the piss out of me for my less than 'leet' guitar skills whereas he was super speeding up and down the scales like a mad man.
He went on before me, and came off to good applause and literally turned to me and said "That crowd will chew you up and shitee you out after that performance from me" and walked off safe in the knowledge that he would be the guy asked to come back for an encore.

I'm not a confident guy, and walked out with my old acoustic under one arm absolutely shiteeeting myself.  I perched myself onto my stool, and then started with a Crowded House song I always start with.  The crowd applauded politely and I fell into a good patch and played my songs including one of my own for 20 minutes.  I then ended on 'Halleljuah' as I like to do if I'm not playing the whole night.  I came off to great applause and sat waiting for the pub vote to see whether or not I had come second to the guitar w**kery bloke........

I didn't............I won............and I went home with a very nice young brunette that night who came over to talk to me after I finished the encore.
As far as I'm concerned singer/songwriter stuff wins the hearts of the ladies every time!

In my experience, the average uber-shredder is usually so far up his own arse, brown-nosing himself about his own "ability", that no-one is particularly interestd in talking to him, let alone any self-respecting female.

 - flame suit well and truly ON.

^ to get to that kind of level though you kind of have to think you suck or you'd never practice.

this is quite a cynical thread.. but i voted for punk, which is what i'm most comfortable with, and being comfortable with yourself is important.

I KNOW I suck technically, and I always will !  THat's why I don't practice, and just rely on my other musical qualities to see me through.

In all seriousness though i'm interested in doing a singer songwriter thing, i was going to learn the Free Fallin' cover by John Mayer. But the thing that sucks is i can't sing and play at the same time, my voice sucks and i can't fingerpick.

Basically it's an all around fail.

I'm not sure - to be really "driven" like that you have to have some deep belief in your natural ability and/or potential.

Or just be suffering from an obsessive-compulsive disorder.

If you really think you suck you'll never be any good even if you practice your ass off, so why bother?  That's what I've been telling myself for 30 years.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Not necessarily. It's all about practice. When i started out playing acoustic, i was 18 (but had been playing guitar since 13), couldn't sing for shite and had almost no sense of rythym. Inside six months, by practicing at both, I could get up at a relaxed open mic night and sing/play for 15 mins. The trick I found helpful was to learn stuff that's very well known, (Hey Joe was the first one for me), don't try new techniques (learn fingerpicking separately from learning your songs) and don't be afraid to use a capo to change the key to suit your voice.

Now (at 27) I'm ok to get up in front of a pub full of people I don't know, armed with nowt but an acoustic, and play for a while. I'm not the best singer in the world, but I can hold a tune ok, and if you're playing songs people recgonise, they'll probably be happy to listen to you.
Hope that's some help anyway.
Warpigs.

This reminded me of a lovely little quote at the end of the DVD documentary / tutorial ' An Evening With Joe Pass' :

You see the little old guy himself enjoying a cigar outside the theatre he had just been playing at - and he jovially / paternally shouts out to this young 'shredder' :

  " learn a few tunes , son - you won't get a girlfriend playing scales "...

God, Joe Pass was so cool.  I don't really enjoy listening to that kind of music but I would love to be able to play it.  Wouldn't have the slightest idea where to start, though.

Well Philly and Andy, I'm glad that quote from Joe, brought a smile to we 'chaps of a certain age'.

The bit I really wanted to mention Philly, is that I'm at that 'starting all over again but not sure how' stage; - and I was there sitting next to a chord melody book, with a headache, and A.D.D - when Joe answered that same question to some young fan during the ' guitar clinic' interview - AND when talking informally to the journalist about his early life.  It went something like this :

" Just play what you think you hear - I only got started because my Father said I had to play some tunes whilst his friends played cards  - and fill in the gaps between the chords to make it sound 'busy' .  I had to just take the record player upstairs and listen to songs, phrase by phrase - very slowly trying to add extra notes to the melody. I did have a book about that stuff - and it was a very good book, but by page six it got really hard - and I had to go back to the record player and guess.  Remember, it was 1947, we had no 'Guitar Institute' - no 'Hot Licks' videos - just guess work- and of course you had to love the songs ".

I mention that Philly, as over the next two days I chose a song ( When I fall In Love ) - and just tried what he said.  It worked, I don't know what all the chords should officially be called - but Joe's simple words just broke the back of it for me. Perhaps it might give you some fun too.  :)

The whole video turned out to be heartwarming and ( literally ) instructional - but it was not the 'down loadable P.D.F files' - or transcriptions that worked for me, it was just a cameraman and sympathetic journalist / guitarist ( Don Mock ) spending a whole day with Joe - walking around outside, rehearsing, bits of a 'masterclass' - a nice receptive interview about Joe's life and influences whilst Don and Joe sat in the seats of the empty theatre - and finally 4 or 5 clips from the evening show.  Now all that is not meant to read like a promo- ad , just to say that it was the casual comments, laughs and Joe chatting spontaniously that began to really break the technical mysteries for me - and of course I am sure that would have been his intention .

Finally I loved it when this really serious young lady( representing us all I suppose ) asked him what the definitive method was for improvising through a II-V , and Joe looked at her impishly and said " what's all this 2 and 5 I keep hearing about ? .....

Give it a go Philly, goodness knows, if I can - anybody can ...

In regards to finger picking, i had NEVER done it until i got my first acoustic in July. Now i can play most things, bluesy soloing, using only my fingers. I found that if you practice Blackbird by the Beatles, that prepares you for it well.

That may be a total load, but it worked for me!
Driving in my car, smoking my cigar, the only time i'm happys when i'm playing my guitar!
