Making own speakers
« on: April 17, 2009, 01:20:07 PM »
Since all guitar realted projects are on hold for the forseeable future, something else had had space in my mind to start forming (and now I can't stop it).  I've got £150 to spend on a new set of floorstanding speakers.

Unfortunately and much to the disgust of Mr's ToneMonkey (she said she could see it comming), I'm thinking that I could probably get better quality for the money if I made them myself.  Maths combined with building stuff is right up my street being the sad git that I am, so it could be inevitable.

I've got two choices really, the first is build a pair of floorstanders which will be either Transmission line of Tapered Quarter Wave Pipe design.  This is the most likely option as it's more staright forward.  The second (off the wall) idea is a pair of small horns mounted in the corners of the walls and a sub for bass, kind of like the little bose cube speakers, but with a horn instead.

Has anyone built their own speakers or does anyone know of any good resources or examples for the second idea.  I've been search around the net all day and have to get some work done at some point  :(

Cheers D&L, I hadn't found those ones yet.  The kits are a bit too expensive (well a lot too expensive for me) but I'll plow through all the info on there 8)

I was doing a bit more research last night and I'm bending my head round the fundamentals of horn design.  I'm begining to think that the idea for a couple of tweeters in the top corners of my room and a sub would actually work.  Got the inlaws here for the weekend so resaerch goes on hold for a bit, but I'll let you know of any progress I make.

Still, anyone feel free to pipe up with any info as I can't have too much at this stage.

I like teaching myself things although I woke up this morning and my first hought was about speakers.  Think I'm going mad (and taking the wife with me - you should see her face when I mention anything speaker  :?)

Have a look at the stock of Henry's Electronics on The Edgeware Road in London, they do loads of kits for speakers, amps ect.

If you haven't already done so, pick up a copy of Vance Dickason's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook from Amazon. I can't remember if it contains information on horn types or not but I'm sure you'd get a lot of useful info from it.
