new(ish) cab day
« on: April 21, 2009, 05:24:15 PM »
SO

today i got my marshall 1960A cab back from zilla music.
some stuff got broke during the re covering but i really like the end result, although i cam away with the wrong casters for it! but im thinking of getting some new ones anyway and a couple of other bits for this.

ANYWAY
Orange Bronco tolex and chrome corners. the corners needed hand hammering into place, but they look cool.
White piping, new black grill cloth, wired by me for 16ohm or 4ohm mono with NO switch. just jacks. nothing fancy.
the jack plate actually has 3 inputs, at the moment one is dummy but i might rewire this cab with another combination of inputs so its cool to have a spare hole in the jack plate. (the dummy will probably just blow up other peoples heads if they borrow my cab and plug into Zero Ohms mwhahaha)

The centre pole was removed for some reason. the part joining the baffle to the rear. i didnt ask for that, just found out when i came to put in the speakers. Put in 2 G12T-75's and 2 Vintage 30's hardwired with solder and 16 gauge speaker wire. jacks and cable from Canford. I also added the wadding in a Bogner-esque fashion. i thought it was so cheap to try out and remove i may as well have a go. so a got a 30mm think 1mx1m piece and a cheap plastic wall stapler. BOOM!

looks cool with my Soldano head! going to get A/B'ing it with my other 1960A to check the sound difference after i go get food and eat!

will report back in a bit!

(excuse the mess in the photo's and also the poor quality of my camera phone)

An odd note, Bogner have the centre pole, but don't screw to it; unlike Marshall.

That looks like a killer half stack!

mines a recover 1960A
i will say, that apart from the corners (which i wanted chrome so i had to compromise on quality/fitting issues) some of it is a bit sloppy. corner joints where the tolex is cut and brought around the corner. you can see it cos the chrome corners dont cover that up. the back panel had loads of staples and glue on the inside, which you cant see now because (its inside obviously) i covered that with the wadding.

the cab wasn't built by them, just covered. when i got it home i found the missing center piece and i also tightened some of the screws up holding the baffle to the top bottom and sides. some of the screws have stripped the wood they've been into, and the rear  plate that was put on has a stripped thread for one screw. but i can fix that with match sticks.

the plastic marshall parts cracked. which is just a danger in taking them off and putting them on. i would have left the rubber grip trays off the top, but they have a recess underneath, and it was easier for paul at zilla to put them back rather than fill up the recess. it now has steel handles too. if you ever want to come see it if you're thinking of getting a cab from them, feel free. or ill send some up close photos of the corners and tolex work.

BTW
i just compared this to my standard marshall cab.
4xG12T-75's vs 2xG12T-75's + 2xV30's (with no center piece and with wadding in the rear)
the 'modded' cab sounds SO much better. much smoother with clearer highs and sweeter bass.
the other cab in comparison sounds harsh in the upper mids and not as full or dynamic.
it's more than a really subtle difference.

I have put the played the cab in stages to find out what effect the wadding would have. but im very happy now with the sound! just need some better casters. this should be on stage in germany at the weekend. sweet!

(EDIT: i wanted to add, the construction issues like screw tightness were most likely left over from marshall's cab builders)

I believe that the purpose of the baton is to mechanically join the baffle to the rear of the cab. I'd imagine that without it, the low-end response of the cab may be altered a little, and the directivity of the cab could be affected (I would expect it to be a little more directive without the pole). I'd be interested to know why they removed it- I don't recall seeing a 4x12 without it.

What is the quality of the tolex like? I've been looking at Zilla for getting some to cover a couple of 1x12 cabs that i'm building down the workshop.

yo,
so these are the corner joints in the tolex. these would be covered by other corners, but not the chrome parts i asked for. still, a lot of cabs and heads dont use corners bits at all, and just line up the tolex really neat, these joins don't seem that neat to me.

the tolex is really good quality.

the join at the bottom where the ends of the tolex meet has been joined as an overlap. ive seen this done a few ways before, cutting an arc and sliding both edges together for example. the overlap is better than the original nasty staples right across the bottom. the black paint on the baffle behind the grill cloth has some scuffs showing through, which i assume are from handling. there are also some blobs on glue on it if you look close. bits of dirt.

I imagine it will clean up easily enough, it has been sat in a dusty workshop.

dunno why they took out that centre plank. i screwed the baffle in harder when i knew that was gone. i know some 4x12's dont have it at all. this cab sounds less beamy than my other standard marshall cab, but that could be in part to the speaker difference. its not like the baffle is now a floating baffle. it probably does have more flex though, so when i get it loud enough for the speakers to make the baffle bow i'll see how it sounds i guess.

Small issues aside, I really like it. It looks very cool, and I'll bet it sounds killer. I like it so much you've just changed my mind about selling my vintage Orange cab! Great set up... the JCM800 ain't half bad either.

i dont mind the small issues at all. its going to go on tour at some point, at which it will probably get ruined. its sounds better than the other cab in that photo. which is cool. that other amp is my sweeeet JCM800 2205! our other guitarist uses it as he doesnt have any of his own gear apart from a few guitars.

Quite right too, they wouldn't bother me either.... although it looks great! I really have just de-listed my Orange cab because of you.... lol. Any sound clips? I'd love to hear that rig.

man, i need a mic.
i only have a Pod UX1 at home for making notes when im writing really.
there is a video i posted of my using the head on youtube at a gig, but i wasnt using this cab.
i dont know how id mic the cab really for comparative purposes between the standard cab and the orange one.
i guess just mic it from a distance.
when i play live ill have to get a soundman (when there is one) to pick a G12T or a V30! i can guess which one most people would mic up.

that vid is hear

my guitar is NOT going through a PA. only the vocals are. sounded better in the room. someone came up to me afterwards and told me i had awesome tone, and asked me about my amp. gonna run the cab out this weekend in germany. hopefully it'll be cool. though no centre pole makes me worry. dont know why.

To be honest I personally would contact Zilla and ask if they still have the support. I believe it's there to stop the back panel moving and giving a "flabby" sound. When you hit power chords imagine the amount of movement within the cab... I would re-fit it. I'm kind of surprised as I've heard nothing but good things about Zilla... but I would at least ask their opinion as they are the experts.

true.
I'll ask.
ive been looking around the net and i can see some photos of cabs that have centre poles with leather on the end, which dont look like they are fixed to the back, but would still have an effect. Like Will said, bogners have a centre pillar that isnt screwed to through the back.
even if i get the pole back, you know, it no biggy to put it in, listen, take it out, listen. they also gave me back the wrong casters, which i didnt check when i picked it up. i took them off because they had super noisy bearings in.
