Pushbutton in pot .. does it exist?
« on: May 09, 2009, 11:25:27 PM »
Hi guys!

As I was looking at my Boss DD-20 I had an epiphany: the "time" pot is a pot with built in push-button (for fast scrolling), and I thought: that is the perfect guitar volume knob + killswitch!!! :D

Now I was wondering, does anyone know if these exist in analog form? (this is of course some kind of digital thingey)

Another idea: it might be possible to "sabotage" a push-push pot so that it doesn't latch in the down-position, effectively giving a momentary-push-pot.. :D

Edit: there's a switch in the pot, when you push down the knob ;) (my explanation is somewhat vague haha)

It's gonna be a nightmare to search for such a pot, and then it will most likely be of minor quality, and you'd have to sacrifice the pure power of your BKPs for a bit of convenience.

I'd rather replace a tone pot with a kill switch.

Yeah after some searching around: it doesn't exist .. not for guitar anyway, and indeed anything other would probably be of lower quality. :(

I'd rather replace a tone pot with a kill switch.

I know, I have a mini-switch in there now. I want it closer to hand though but I need my volume pot to I'm stuck.
It's in an Ibanez S470DXQM, 2 holes only, and I'm not drilling any more ;)

Aw well, it was a nice dream. Maybe someday it will catch on haha, it would be nice for all those one-pickup-one-knob guitars. :)
As for modding a push-push .. I think it would be possible, but it would require a large amount of luck to get it back together and working properly.. (and reliably). :(

what about moving the volume pot to the tone pot position and putting a push momentary switch where the vol used to be?

No because as I said I use my volume a lot ;) I want it within easy reach.
Plus it has priority over the killswitch, but having them intergrated would be a fabulous solution :D

hmm yes but then with a proper potentiometer on it, what did you search for? "potentiometer momentary switch" ?

yeah.
that place also does rotatry switches that have proper pots on them.
maybe if you call em up they could help you out? if they can fit some pots to rotary switches maybe they could do you a one of a kind switch? worth a shot

That's a great idea actually, I hadn't looked at their other stuff yet ;)

I'll send them an e-mail in the morning, when I can spell properly again haha . (it's half past 1 over here in the Netherlands and i'm getting a bit sleepdrunk as we call it ;) )

Thanks for the great help! I'll report back about it, I can imagine other people thinking this is a good idea too. :D

yeah,
maybe you can bring that up.
if they make it, and its an original product then people (guitarist) are going to be into it. they just need to market it hahaha. you'd be doing them a favour

I want one!

you can get a kill switch in a pedal, but I don't think it would be easy to use in a musical way

You could give Legra Guitars a hollar and ask if they could make it for you, they deal with weird electronics all the time! http://www.legraguitars.co.uk

fenders s1 switch is a push button on the volume knob, must be a way to wire that as a kill switch... you are stuck with fender knobs though

But I think it's still a push/push SWITCH rather than a button...

Yes it is a push-push switch because it stays "down" after being pressed.
Plus no way in hell I'm going to put a strat knob on my Iba S

Yes but actually constructing a potmeter?

I'm getting around to e-mailing OMEG about building me a potmeter in a minute.

If they are willing, are there any other takers? (seeing as how 10 will be considerably cheaper than 3:))
