Within all varieties of popular music, I don't think there's a better vocalist across the board than Mike Patton. Not by a long shot. But I think there are a lot of people who do specific things better than him.

It's a touch hard to pick a "best" overall, since it's not entirely fair or sensible to compare black metal vocalists with guys in 80's stadium rock bands.

Freddie Mercury wins it for me, but Cornell is awesome.

I loved James LaBrie when I first heard him. And I still do. I don't care if he had a long period during which his range was messed up because of an injury, I just really like his voice and phrasing.

Chris Cornell is one of my favourite singers, on Audioslaves first (and best) album he's on fire :)

Another favourite is Matt Skiba from Alkaline Trio, he's awesome

I couldn't begin to suggest one vocalist. All posted here are worthy. I do love Steve Marriott and Aretha. Early Rod Stewart was pretty damn good- hard to believe now maybe but  the early solo albums and the Faces stuff had some great moments. And I agree with the Paul Rodgers mention too. I also love guys like Nat King Cole -I have come to appreciate him as I have got older and at the risk of appearing really square I would say Glen Campbell.
