NGD - and my first BKP guitar!
« on: May 22, 2009, 11:05:26 AM »
This is a bit of a strange one. I bought this guitar on eBay at the weekend, and it arrived this morning.  It's my first guitar actually equipped with BKPs, and probably a bit of a strange guitar to have BKPs fitted!

First, the pics.

It's not quite as orange as the first couple of pics suggest - the better colour representation is the 3rd pic.

So far, I guess most people are thinking ... so what.  A "Richwood".  Hmmmm.  Alleged retail c£400.  I've only ever seen them on eBay.

The third pic shows the reason that I was interested in it ...

The eBay listing didn't really emphasise the p'ups, and I stumbled across it while just killing (wasting) some time on-line.  TBH, I was a bit wary.  The seller had little feedback (though what he had was positive) and he wanted payment by cheque rather than PayPal.  He was also unusually offering free delivery.

But it had £190-worth of BKPs, plus upgraded pots, plus a hardcase, plus a little headphone amp, AND he included the original p'ups & pots.  Oh, and it had had a full (and, as turns out, very good) set-up.

So I was tempted enough to bid enough to win it without paying a silly price!

It arrived this morning, bang-on schedule, packed better than anything I've ever seen before, and it sounds pretty damn good through my little Epi Jr.  The BKPs are everything that I'd hoped for.  The actual instrument isn't half bad either (though a little bling with all the MoP (?) inlays and gold hardware), with good solid tuners, a perfectly straight and playable neck and a good balance.  Korean made, which I guess is generally one step up from Chinese made.

My original plan was to harvest the BKPs, put it back to original components and sell it on ... but now I'm not so sure ... I may just have to keep it.

Looks damn good!

Sounds damn better  :D

The sun was out and directly on the guitar in the first couple of shots - it's really not that orange in real life.

I agree re the pearl ... the VHIIs give me an excellent raw rocky sound through the Epi Jr.  I could take all the pedals out of the way and get a great sound just from guitar into amp.  Obviously plenty of power, but it's all clear - no muddiness.  The house has been busy since the guitar arrived, so I've only had 5 mins play time ... and I've only just realised that both p'ups have been tapped too ...  ... I'll get to switch the amp back on again later this afternoon and give it a longer play.

What I need to work out is whether to take the BKPs out of this, and put them in the black Kawai (for example) ... the seller included the original Richwood p'ups & pots, so I could sell this guitar on, just keep the p'ups (which was my original plan).  The Kawai with VHIIs might be an awesome combination.

It looks very pretty
The gold is at least a satin finish
If you get on with the guitar really well you might change the gold bits to tame down the look and maybe end up with slightly better quality bits

Looks great.  I presume the top is some kind of veneer, maybe with plain maple beneath, but so what if it sounds good!
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Nice idea, but it'd still be bling - it's the inlays that do it.  Plus, I have a very nice Kawai that was going to receive the BKPs ... now that would be a good use of BKPs  :D

I don't actually know, but I'll have a close look at the top when I take the pickups out.  If I take the pickups out (see next post!)

Don't rush into any decisions, live with it for a while.
I've already been surprised by the quality of the guitar which has made me stop and think.  It's light enough for my old back.  It's well enough made.  I can live with the looks.  It plays nicely.  And it really does sound good - though I think the p'ups are a large part of that.

This is the one that would get the pickups ...

I can certainly see the black BKPs in there, chrome pickup rings, chrome knobs ... and it should sound amazing
