i could never dial a tone i was 100% happy with using my dual rec, till i changed all the preamp tubes and the power tubes. I use JJ gold pin 12AX7's in V1 and the PI and standard JJ 12AX7's in the rest. I also use JJ EL34's in it.

I tried 6L6, 6V6 and KT88. EL34 where my faves, with 6V6 second.

kinda of off topic but i just thought id add that.
I did the same thing with my Dual Rec! Basically, it's like a Marshall now ... :)

exactly!
haha.

i also replaced the presence control on the orange channel with another presence pot. its a 'mod' mentioned in the manual and i got the pot for free from the UK distributor!!!!
makes the orange channel a bit brighter and closer to the red channel. but its not like having 2 red channels.

Perhaps I should have done the same thing, but I gave up and sold it in a huff.

I use the Splawn or Laney at home/gigs ...

Saggy, blubbery low end and I just couldn't get it as snarly and aggressive as I'd have liked.

To be fair, I bought as a much younger guy who didn't really know exactly what he was looking for but had the money to buy a pro amp. If I'd taken less advice and listened more I'd have never bought it.

what splawn do you use?

as for the dual rec. the preamp tube changes made a big difference. takes out some of the over the top grind from the red channel, smooths it up a bit. the EL34's bring a bit of that 'british' tone back. i found it gave me the right balance of low end i was looking for.

I use a Quick Rod, Mk 2 (The two preamp slot version). And the way I've been using it of late is considered heresy by the Splawn forumites.

There is no actual "Mk 2". It's not the original preamp circuit, nor is it the new version which has 3 preamp valves.

I've thought a lot about a Splawn too, a Quick Rod competition. For practicing and recording as much as anything, plus as a British sounding, cleaner sideman to my 6505+.

One day.

i was just reading something that says it has no gear knob or something.  the whole thing with splawns and gears took me a bit to get my head around. I wont ever buy one from splawn because it has to come through sounds great.

this is it.

dunno if it would fit my purpose though

super comp looks interesting. single channel nitro. ive never been in the presence of a splawn though.

The Competition is DEFINITELY a try before you buy amp! It's much brighter than a Nitro, Pro Stock, Quick Rod, etc.

Oh really? I thought it was just a Quick Rod front end with half the power amp valves.

It is, on paper, just supposed to be the OD channel of the QR. But it definitely sounds different.
