What are we learning / playing at the moment?
« on: September 21, 2009, 08:12:38 PM »
At the moment I'm learning two Rory Gallagher songs, Shin Kicker and Brute Force & Ignorance. My band is going to be playing these at our next gig at the end of the month. Learning these songs with my Rory Strat of course ;)
BKP's own: Irish Tours, Mule(b), Black Dog(b)
BKP's had: Riff Raffs, Nailbombs

Velvet Revolver - Fall to Pieces. Not exactly complicated but its hard to get the solo right. The chorus lead line is so addictive to play, as well :)

Funnily enough, I was playing Brute Force and Ignorance earlier! I love the intro... good luck with the instrumental though - I saw it a few times and that's the one that I still find jaw-dropping, I've no idea how to do it... (I can noodle about on the slide stuff, but it's the "mandolin" type chord bit that stuns me..)

I also seem to be playing his "I Fall Apart" quite a lot, because this new strat just sounds like that - the IT'd strat, er, doesn't!

But I've also been trying out early ZZ Top stuff to see which ones I think are strat tunes (ie he played them on a strat) - I suspect Nasty Dogs is, it seems to sound more "authentic" on a strat than on a Les Paul...

I'm learning the set for the band I'm joining, some epic solos to learn (Deep Purple), but learnt these recently:

* Soulmover - Glenn Hughes
* Let Sleeping Dogs Lie - Michael Schenker
* Master Of Illusion - Gothard

I was a bit burnt out on this stuff today, so I had an afternoon of grind and sludge courtesy of Insect Warfare and Weedeater  :D

I found this awesome Danny Gatton lesson series on YouTube so I'm having a try at his picking techniques.  It's going to take a looong time to get anywhere with this.

A personal arrangement  of the Jazz Standard - "The Very Thought Of You " .

I also want to 'knuckle down' and memorise  the key signatures and chord structures within each key - to better  'spell' as I go along , instead of leaning back on chord diagrams - and thus provide a solid technical foundation for future Jazz improvisation in the years ahead.  :)

I learned this song about 2 years ago or so, and I can't agree more, that little chorus lead line is so addtive. I've forgotten pretty much the entire rest of the song, but I still run that little line most times I pick up a guitar, it's great!

I learned Black Night by Deep Purple because my band were thinking of covering it, we decided against it because we found out another two bands on the circut cover the same song, oh well, it's still a good riff to know  :P

We're thinking of another cover to learn at the minute, we're not really sure what to do, but the singer seems pretty set on doing I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister haha.
Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty > Cold Sweat + Mississippi Queen + Riff Raff

Lenny.

Finding those chords and the timing difficult!
I think I hate being indecisive.

Superheroes - Racer X

I don't pretend I'll ever be able to play all of it (especially the solos!), I'm just going for the highlights.

Hideway from the Beano album - (for about 6 months now - my memory is so poor I memorize about 4 bars a month)
The solo to La Grange
I am also working through the Stranglers greatest hits

On the acoustic -
Stagolee by Mississippi John Hurt
Someday Baby - Slide classic by Mississippi Fred McDowell.

Never seem to get anywhere at the moment though - I nail something oneday, the nextday I just can't remember how I did it.
