Which DS/OD pedal for an LC30 (tonebone vs CM vs ?)
« on: November 08, 2005, 03:24:59 PM »
Hi all,

I got an LC30II and i am very happy with it. But i was thinking of getting extra gain out of it, as well as a different flavor of gain possibly. I ditched the idea of tampering with OD pedals on top of my gain channel as i tried the SD1 and the badmonkey , which didnt impress me for what i was looking for (good ODs though).

I am hovering now over the idea of using a distortion pedal on top of my clean channel in order to create a 3rd gain channel on my amp.

My options
Tonebone Hotbritish
CM PlexiTone
HBE Big D
EHX English Muffin.

High gain? beeing able to palm mute to hell and get screeching pinch harmonics

Also classic marshall stack gain from mild to high gain is mostly desired (my most used setting)

And finally i would appreciate if the pedal could act well in conjunction with my Fulltone Soulbender fuzz. In other words, set the DS (hotbritish?) pedal on mild gain (light breakup) and then slam the Soulbender on top to get Jimmy Page's fuzz tones ala black dog, moby dick etc..

Looking forward to your replies

The most versatile unit on the list is the Big D. However, you should look into a HomeBrew Power Screamer, too. The Big D might be too tweaky for ya.

Cheers TO,

Does it sound marshalley? ie like the hotbritish? And furthermore, does it sound like an amp through the clean channel?

Do you have any head to head experiences with the above pedals? I would be greatfull for some insight. And sorry for the flood of questions.

I wish i could try them head to head , but NONE is available locally let alone with my amp.

Hey Yannis, did you go with the Black Dog's?

What do you reckon?

The PlexiTone is supposed to be a pretty versatile unit, but needs an external power supply (runs at something like 12v but has a captive power lead), as does the ToneBone. Haven't heard anything on the English Muffin, but if TO (and a few others on this forum) like the HBE gear, then it should sound quite good. ;)

I'm running a Vintage RAT, a ZW-44 and a MicroAmp at the moment, but still not happy with my sound. Ever since I tweaked all the EQ settings, the RAT sounds awful (damn that "filter" knob! Otherwise a great pedal), the ZW sounds good, but it's noisy, and there's just something about the MicroAmp I'm not entirely sure about.

What about a TS-9 or TS-808 reissue?

The Power Screamer is what the Fulltone OCD wants to be when it grows up.

I prefer using the HBE BIg D to add colour to an overdriven amp - I'm not sure it's the best OD to marshallize a clean amp - how about the HAO rust driver, good tone and one knob!!

My Wylde OD started quiet..and is getting noisier now

Oh dear, the New York boo-teek gear wall again. I could spend months in that shop, trying everything.

Yannis, have you ever thought about the Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor? You'll add 2 channels to your clean channel. It does pretty much what you describe. And you can use it as a booster for the amp's dirty channel too. Vey Marshally tone. It's not for every amp, so I have no idea how it will work on yours but it's worth it to try one out.

Cheers guys. Wow lots of info.

Now, i havent tried any pedals so far apart from a few mainstream OD pedals (SD1, OS2, BM, DS1)

To be honest, i dont really care to put the new pedal on top of my clean or OD channel. I just want another flavor of distortion, that can do the marshall stack thing, as well as high gain stuff. Ultimately i would like it to be a nice low OD marshall base tone, so that i can slam my Fuzz on top to get Page tones.

I am in Exeter, and unfortunately the variety of pedals here is a joke imho, so i would have to travel to Bath in order to try a BigD, or go back to Greece for xmas in order to try a Plexitone or a Tonebone Hotbritish.

BTW some pricing.

BigD 155quid (UK)
Hotbritish (160quid (Greece)
Plexitone (110quid Greece).

yu have to go to greece to try a pedal called 'hotbritish'?!.... this is ridiculous - i'm gonna open a few decent guitar stores. with a custom shop, and amp modification aswell. i'm determined. theres NO good music shops in this entire bloody country i swear...
(...well there must be, but they arent very prominent, and i've never found one...)

Indy i know it sounds silly, that there are no tonebones were i live... :(

Funny thing is that Greece is slightly cheaper for pedals than the UK and i expected the exact opposite!
