Diagram request.. PK H/H going into Ibanez 5 way switch?
« on: November 07, 2009, 09:11:21 AM »
Ok my Ibanez has Dimarzio H/H setup going into a 5 way super switch with the following selection.

I'd like to replace the pups with a Painkiller matched pair AND replace the tone knob for a 2nd volumne knob. So each pup has its own volumne.

Its only has two knobs, one vol and one tone... so the end result will be x2 vol and zero tone knob. Can anyone supply a diagram of what the wiring should look like or at least point me in the right direction?

Cheers.

Look up your model number here and the diagram will be there
You will have to convert the colour codes though
You will also be required to turn the magnet of the neck pickup around or order one specially that way

Thanks. Unfortunately that site doesnt have my model. Its an J-Custom RG8527 and the production years are 2002 & 2004. Neither of those years list the guitar.

Sorry for my noobishness but why does the neck magnets have to be turned around? I already had the pickups delivered. I did mention to Tim that it was for an RG8527 in emails, however I did not mention the model in the actual order process.

I am getting it installed by a luthier who is the actually BKP resseller here in NZ... hopefully I'm making a big deal out of nothing? :|

EDIT: I've put a request in the Ibanez forum. Dunno how helpful they'll be but I'm hopeful.

I'd suggest trying it with the pickups as is first of all, and see if that gives you the tone you'd like.

If it's not quite right your luthier should be able to turn the magnet around easily enough, he won't even need to desolder anything.

Thanks once again but can anyone tell me why the magnets would need to turned around the first place?

My current plan was to simply have the screwpole sides facing away from each other and the slug pole sides on the inside facing eacher other like in most setups. (i realise the poles arent the same piece as magnets, just thought i'd give some fyi)

Cheers.

EDIT: Got some info from a Ibanez forum member. This is apparently a 6 String equivilent of the diagram, it seems right because I do remember my luthier saying it had a dual PCB design for the switch.

The magnetic orientation of one pickup will need to be changed to get the configuration shown in the diagrams - where all choices are in phase and be hum cancelling (esp when the two inner coils are selected together in position 2 - one of these coils will need to be north polarity and one will need to be south polarity to achieve in phase and humcancelling operation. )

If you are happy to have inner coil of one pickup and outer of the other  in this position then the magnet does not need to be reversed. This is also the case on the John Petrucci  Musicman or Ibanez guitars

Of course Petrucci had his neck pickup installed backwards in his Ibanez models, you can see the screws are facing the bridge and slugs are next to the neck.

Which automatically reverses the polarity of that pickup!
You may need reverse the colour coding of the wires on a stock BKP to get it right if you just put it in back to front (but no big deal)
