I thought this was gonna be about the names people give to their gear, something which makes we want to stab myself in the face.

I'm glad it isn't.
I don't think said people would mind if you stabbed yourself in the face.

I'd imagine not, but I can always sit safe in the knowledge that I'm infinitely less of a wank.  :)

You don't name your guitars NFE? Is it really that offensive to said face?  :D

I'm not a 12 year old girl.

Honestly, it just drives me up the wall. At work, even hearing dafties utter nonsense like "SHE plays great" makes half the shop staff visibly wince. It just seems so unbearably childish. People naming ANY inanimate object seems stupid to me, though I can almost tolerate boats, given it's such an old tradition.

Is this really unusual? As I say, the entire staff at my work find it laughable, and we're a whole shop of musicians, obviously.

Hmm...I think your probably on the far side of the fence this time, inanimate objects that can have a "personality" of sorts and is central to your craft (a ship, a car, a guitar) are often designated in the feminine tense.  Its not uncommon at all really.

I tend to agree.  Not so bothered about naming things - it can be just a convenient label, with no great anthropomorphic significance -  but when people call guitars "she" (or refer to their car as "the old girl") it does make me cringe.

Which doesn't mean I don't get sentimentally attached to inanimate objects.  I tend to ascribe mystical significance to the fact that something's old, or that I've owned it a long time.  Which is why I wouldn't carve up a vintage guitar.  Probably just as bad as the names thing, really.

I think Way Huge's Swollen Pickle and Pork Loin should be up for consideration.
