I'm the very face of astonishment

I still have no idea what "cannae get unless they buffer" means.

I tend to agree.  Not so bothered about naming things - it can be just a convenient label, with no great anthropomorphic significance -  but when people call guitars "she" (or refer to their car as "the old girl") it does make me cringe.

while i agree and don't call inanimate objects "he" or "she", i wonder is it a throwback to when english had genders for nouns? I know most other european languages do (certainly romance and germanic). and english is pretty much german and norse whacked together with french and a bit of latin. and maybe a wee bit of celtic.

EDIT: yup, old english had gender for nouns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_english#Germanic_origins

yeah, i know i suck for being interested in this kind of shite.

If people regularly did it with ANY inanimate object then there'd maybe be some merit in that. But they don't, it's only ever prized possessions or something they're proud to own.

yeah, of course, they might just be prats.

it's done a lot with ships, though. they always seem to be called "she". though any words for ship in either german or french i just looked up were either neuter or masculine...

going with prats, yeah.

It's a good argument, Dave, but why is it always "she" not "he"?  Surely old English nouns had both genders, just like modern languages.

Lets stick with prats.

Bollocks is a little more English (but not uncommon in Scotland), baws (balls) would be more common/traditional (at least in the West).

If people all did the same thing, life would be boring. It atleast gives you something to talk about, right??

Yeah we (me, Edith and Alice) wanna see the scars

Not all me geetars have names though - and Edith and Alice aren't even my favourites, but the names just appeared from somewhere and stuck.
