Just picked up some last minute Deep Purple tickets
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:08:00 PM »
Got some last minute tickets for the Deep Purple show tomorrow in Glasgow off of a friend.

Always wanted to see Purple live as they were a massive influence on my music playing when I was growing up. I know that Blackmore doesn't play with them anymore, but I do know that Steve Morse is a pretty awesome guitarist in his own right. I've been told that it's still Ian Gillan and Ian Paice, and occassionally Jon Lord that are touring at the moment.

Looking forward to it, but not quite sure what to expect. It should be a fun night with some classic tunes regardless though :)
BKP's own: Irish Tours, Mule(b), Black Dog(b)
BKP's had: Riff Raffs, Nailbombs

The classic tunes might be great but Steve Morse sometimes does he own thing, which is normal but you can tell it's his signature stuff.

It'll probably be great nonetheless, hope I didn't shoot your hopes or anything down, lol

Don't forget Roger Glover!!  :)

Don Airey's now the permanent keyboard player, Jon Lord has retired (although maybe he sometimes puts in a guest appearance, I don't know)

Edit:  So anyway, I've just realised you've already seen the show.  What was it like??

I'm a bit late at updating this, but I was waiting for my mate to upload his videos to youtube.

The show was quite possibly THE best gig I have been to. It was a very intimate gig in Glasgow (inside the armadillo). It was so intimate in the fact that there was no security barrier at all so we were right up at the front of the stage. We were stood right in front of Roger Glover, and even got to shake his hand on a number of occassions.

Ian Gillans voice is still in good form and Steve Morse ripped out some tasty leads. Roger Glover, Don Airey and Ian Paice were all very very good too. It was more or less a greatest hits set but it was very enjoyable. Ian Gillan also mentioned that there is to be a new album next year too.

My friend was taking videos throughout the night, I was standing on his right singing along with most of the songs. If you get a chance to see Deep Purple on tour I would definitely reccomend it, sure it would be better of Ritchie Blackmore was still with them, but Steve Morse is a very worthy replacement and they put on a great show.

As I said, my friend was filming some stuff on his phone so here you can see how close we actually were:

Amazing what you can do with a phone nowadays!  You didn't half pick up a lot of Roger's bass on the audio!

Glad you had fun. I've seen them twice now, thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The old guys still have it in them, and Don & Steve are perfect for the band. I really couldn't imagine a better choice. They have very similar styles to Jon and Ritchie but are more technically proficient so they can fill their shoes as well as add something interesting and new to the mix.

Yeah I saw them about 2 years ago. Was an amazing gig, but indeed Steve Morse, a kickass player no doubt, got on my balls with his showing off too much. I'd have loved him to stay closer to the original solos a bit, or at least within the spirit of them while doing his own thing.

That's funny because I think that's exactly spot on what he does.
