on Friday ran out at lunchtime to buy a new SD-1, on my way home brought the components for the mods to OD-1 specs.

few hours ago I tried the stock SD-1.. i still quite like the SD-1 in standard spec, even if its a bit meh.

so just finished modded it to the later dual opamp OD-1 specs. sounds really really good. colours the sound hugely - very bright. changing the EQs on my 2204 to suit, the most amazing 80s metal tone comes out. cleans up well too.

found some circuit tweaks on the net to make it closer to the original quad op-amp version, which I'll now try. will report back

Sounds like I may have to keep my eye out for one of these... bright... 80s... cleans up well... where's the downside?! :)

the downside is the price IF you can find one.

its really not difficult to mod a SD-1 to OD-1 specs if you can read a schematic.  if not, there are people who will do it for you.

a nice tweak might be to hardwire a true bypass and take the input and output buffers out.  my experiments show that the buffers do thin the tone slightly.

Looking at the schem for the OD1, it's pretty simple, so I think i'm gonna have a go at building a clone, with a couple of little tweaks... removing the buffers sounds like an interesting idea!

Has been ages since i've faffed about with pedals, been working too much inside mixing console channel strips!

an od-1 would be really nice with your plexi-modded laney oli!

some people on the net claim the OD-1 was release before the tube screamer. no idea if this is true, the od-1 was released in 1977, and i think the TS was as well, but I've found no actual evidence.

the earliest reference I can find to a TS-9 or TS-808 is 1980, with the suggestion that a few of them were shipped to non-US destinations in 1979, but that these models did not have the classic tube screamer circuit.  I found this info on the Analogman website.  This website also says, on their OD-1 page that, the OD-1 was the first tube screamer 'type' overdrive on the market.  It would therefore appear that the OD-1 precedes the TS-808.

btw, I've recorded a clip of my SD-1 to OD-1 mod and its uploding onto youtube now - check later if you want to hear it.

EDIT: here it is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFqQZjJ828c

what about those orange ibanez overdrives that were pre ts?
or were they a totally different circuit again? i just thought they were the predecessor to the tubescreamer range. never been near an actual one so no idea, saw one for sale a while ago, it wasnt working and it still cost more than my 120w tubehead (it was a bargain of a head)

they were a different circuit design and sounded more fuzz-like.

Sorry for the thread revive, just seen both an od1 (2nd series i think, so dual op amp) and a fulltone ocd on our local auction site. I've heard a bit of buzz about the ocd on here, but never really paid attention, are these better for overdriving dirty amps or as flat out distortion pedals?
any one with experience with both? looking for basically an 80s traditional/thrash metal tone.
id be using them to crank the front end of a 800 style amp

The OCD is definitly an overdrive, not a disto. I never tried the OD1, but from the name and what have been said in this thread, it's obviously an OD too.

you can use it as a light distortion, but its better with an already crunchy amp. the od-1 is perfect with a jcm800, but its no transparent drive, its very coloured. its ideal for the traditional 80s tone, but no one could say this is a boutique effect.

od1 auction ended and i got a very reasonable fixed price offer so grabbed it
we used one through a ceriatone 800 for our recent recording and it sounded awesome. was before i had my red bear so hopefully sounds just as good (or better)
i think the one we used looks like the same later model as i just bought.
will put the ocd back outta my mind for now. dont need a 6th od/dist pedal
probably should start selling some of the others

if you want to hear an OD-1 into a JCM800, look no further... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFqQZjJ828c

the amp is modded to have more gain already, but I'm only running the amp's gain on 6 in this clip and the OD-1's gain around 1/4 up.
