Great Queen gig on BBC2 tonight (Friday)
« on: November 27, 2009, 10:44:56 AM »
The BBC are showing a repeat of the 1975 Queen concert at Hammersmith Odeon
Bohemian Rhapsody had just gone to Number 1  in the charts (it meant something to be No1 back then!)
Well worth watching

Today, 23:35 on BBC Two

Quote

From BBC's listing for the programme:

On Christmas Eve 1975, Queen crowned a glorious year with a special concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon. The final night of their triumphant UK tour, the show was broadcast live on BBC TV and radio, and has become a legendary event in Queen's history.

Featuring stunning renditions of early hits Keep Yourself Alive, Liar and Now I'm Here alongside Brian May's epic guitar showcase Brighton Rock, a rip-roaring version of the then new Bohemian Rhapsody and the crowd-pleasing Rock 'n' Roll Medley, this hour-long concert shows Queen at an early peak and poised to conquer the world.

Thanks for the "heads up" on this... I've seen it before but never enough times.

That's nice timing, I've been listening to Queen a lot this week despite going through my whole life without ever buying one of their albums!  I also saw a clip from that Hammersmith show recently, never seen it before.  I love the '70s period when they all had hair!

Thanks Jon, I'll definitely watch that.  :)

Thanks for the heads-up :D

I saw it when it was first broadcast - no idea how, I was only 12, and the TV in our house was very much controlled by what my Dad wanted to watch. Seeing as I wasn't really into rock music at the time, I don't really imagine me arguing too strongly to see it, and I really can't see my Dad going out of his way to watch those camp nail-varnish-wearing chaps at the time!!

BUT... I strongly believe that this concert, and the video for "We are the Champions" a year or two later are almost entirely responsible for enticing me into music-performance rather than playing cricket like wot my Dad wanted!

Is it the same concert that won the BBC video vote on Live Aid? - they offered us several famous music things from through the ages, and the Queen gig beat all-comers... I can remember watching "In the Lap of the Gods (revisited)" that afternoon and learning something very useful for a lead vocalist - "if you know you can't reach the recorded high-note, sing a harmony instead, with conviction, it's just as good..."

Looking forward to it :D

Yep, I think that's the one.

Alas! I missed it last night :(

Just couldn't stay awake... slept through the whole thing!! Gettin too old I guess...

However, checking through a couple of those Queen clips on youtube has just thrown me into "Queen" mode - happens every couple of years, I end up listening to and watching Queen for weeks on end...

Might have to put the strat down... my Riff Raff loaded SG is the guitar most suited at the moment, and the iminent christmas arrival of an AC4TV (which I used an SG to test out) will match this mood very well!

(Just have to make sure I don't go near any shops with "Red Special" copies in )

Actually, Jonathan, have you ever looked into making one? I know you've handled the original... I suspect you must have contemplated one at some point :D

I caught the end of it in bed - I'd not heard their Jailhouse Rock cover before. Pretty good although I prefer the ZZ Top version on Fandango. I'll be watching the recording from the start at some point over the next few days.

Are we expecting you to be the owner of a Red Special any time soon Andy?

Yes, if he just happens to be strolling past a music shop on an "Andy day" and one starts calling his name!

It would have to be an "Andy Day" during one of my "Queen" phases

No "Andy Days" on the immediate horizon - not enough unallocated funds in the tin under the bed!

No, I was just thinking aloud up there ^ (still am...)

I've often wondered "what sort of guitar would I want if I went to Feline with a commission..." - and I don't really have a sensible answer or one that remains attractive after thinking about it for a week or so...

And then I suddenly realised, while typing my last post here, that a "Red Special" is something a bit out of the ordinary that I have had a vague desire for on-and-off for nearly 30 years, and Jonathan is a big Queen fan... and...
