 Still at the "thinking" stage... and I suspect there might be issues over copying it for sale...

Possibly, but how about DIY? It's quite popular (check out this link http://rs-onevision.50webs.com/index1.htm ) and I'm sure there's no harm getting a professional to help you with it... for a fee naturally.

You'll also need a curly perm and clogs (I've already got mine)

Wow, that's quite interesting - wouldn't really solve the "what if I wanted a Feline guitar, wot sort would it be?" question though

Could be, could be...

About the only drawback on that one, for me, would have been a big plus for others (eg Philly) - I'd prefer the full body thickness on an LP type.

If I was speccing up a guitar for myself, it would probably be red though! And I think it might be less "luxurious" than the Elmerald Lion. I suspect it would be a twin P90 affair, very much like the feel/vibe of my Gibson Faded SG Special, but mebbe a bit chunkier in the body - that's as far as I've got and keep coming back to every couple of months...

Meanwhile, while hacking Brian May riffs out on my SG this morning, I've been prowling around the interweb and found this:

http://www.brianmayguitars.co.uk/

I've seen these about, but never tried one, or really cottoned on to what they were. As there's affordable "offical" Red Specials, that's probably the route I'd go in this case. In a way I'd prefer the knife-edge-and-knitting-needle tremelo, but his guitar tech seems to think this is an improvement, so who knows?

Also, and this quite surprised me, they are slightly below the usual "Andrew budget" for guitars... looks like I need to try one out!

The fact they exist, in that price range, pretty much rules out the DIY route for me, I wanna play, more than try to build.

The existance of "brianmayguitars" also makes me think that there would definitely be "licensing issues" for other builders creating copies for sale!!

The Brian May models aren't too bad at all -feel pretty comfy
they do a Super version made in Japan that is much closer to the original in terms of it's neck profile but that would be a deterrent to 99% of players as the original has a huge neck - it makes me admire Brian all the more!

That's definitely true, I know Legra has done a few red-specials and the neck profile is something that is always changed!

You're not wrong there... VERY comfy :D

Yep folks, yesterday was an "Andy Day" - and I blame Philly and Ian... completely, utterly, and entirely (with a little help from Jonathan, and a LOT of help from Mrs AndyR )

It turned out, during discussions, that the already wrapped AC4TV, as an amplifier, didn't really feel like much of a "Christmas Present" to Mrs R. And that a guitar, if it was the right one (eg a "special one that you wouldn't really buy because you don't really need it, but you'd rather like to have it anyway..."), would feel much more like a chrimbo pressie...

So I was dispatched up to town to see if I could find one to try. I found one, tried it, talked the shop (a Denmark St shop!) down to internet prices :o and walked off with a gig bag with "Brian May" written on it. The shop couldn't find the wang-bar (what's new?) but it's on order and hopefully will appear before I'm allowed to see the guitar again (25th Dec).

They're Korean made, but feel really high quality. I couldn't find any of the usual little niggles I spot on guitars. Eg the neck and fretwork is at least as good as the first Squier CV tele I tried - and a damn sight better than the two US Gibsons I have!

The switching arrangements are bit "crazy" to start with - but surprisingly easy to get used to. And strangely enough, on this guitar I can see more use for the "pickups in series, one out of phase, tone"... I don't like it at all on my Baja tele, and the S-1 switch might eventually go because of it. But on the Red Special it seems to kind of make some sense and a slightly more usable sound.

Roll on Christmas!!! (Of course, what this all meant was that I've now paid for the AC4TV myself, and it's kicking @rses and taking names even as we speak...)

I've always thought this as well - when I first read about it years ago, I couldn't belive he was managing to play how he does. I understand it's kinda "square" in profile, as well as somewhat chunkier, than your average speed neck?

The neck on the Korean Brian May guitars feels to me kinda like a cross between my strats and my Explorer. In fact, thinking about it, it's very similar to my old JV Squier strat's neck, except a fair bit wider (which was always a slight problem for me) - that's probably why I fell in love with it after 5 mins, even with 9s on it!  I didn't measure it or compare it, but I don't know whether it's like the original in being a slightly shorter than Gibson scale-length - it does feel like I don't really want to put my usual 11s on it though. Still, that's all to look forward to :D

I think we need advice on the perm and the clogs first - and maybe one of those mid 70s costumes with the wings that he wore  (and a corset to go under it, I'm not as slim as I used to be...)

I've got some black nail varnish somewhere (haven't used it since 82 or 83, so it might be a bit sticky by now), and I've still got a little stack of sixpences, so I'm pretty much set... just relearning the Bohemian Rhapsody guitar solo at the moment!

Congrats on the purchase, Andy!

I've always wanted to try out the Brian May guitars. I saw one in my local store a couple of months back but I was only in there to pick up some strings and picks and was in a bit of a hurry so never tried it out. I went back there a week or so later to give it a go but they had already sold it by then.

Good stuff Andy! Looking forward to some clips once it's officially yours! I'm pleased that this was partly my fault!

Now you have the vox and the red special I think you should get a Greg Fryer/Brian May treble booster
I think I hate being indecisive.

Mrs R should give out lessons to the "better halves" of all forumites. Mrs 38th could certainly learn a trick or two from Mrs R by the sounds of things.

Yep, I have to admit that I have a very special and very lovely wife :D

She'll be getting jolly stuff as well, but I'm very much aware how lucky I am to have a partner who regards "guitar-based" stuff as somewhat similar to her liking jewellery, holidays, or nice clothes - she therefore understands why "another guitar" might be something someone would actually want!!
