Bonamassa!
« on: November 29, 2009, 10:46:33 PM »
Myself, Matt77 and Shobet all headed off to see Joe Bonamassa in Llandudno yesterday.  After a slight diversion/wrong turn on the way (Matt's fault...) we got there in time to grab some fish 'n' chips and join the queue that was forming outside.  A short wait, a quick touch-up for Shobet's man boobs, and we were in.

Unfortunately we couldn't get that great a view....

After much hilarity at the support act (camel toe anyone?) Joe gave a great 2 hour set with the second best live tone I've ever heard.  It was almost as nice as mine  ;)  Great big beefy sound, no ear splitting treble.  Lovely.  Superb playing too, he was on top form.

Quite a few nice geetars, of which the Flying V above was my favourite.  This Les Paul was very tasty too, and really vintage-y looking.  It's not come out in the pic as spectular as it was in the flesh:

If you get the chance to see him, you really should.  Highly recommended, especially if Matt and Shobet can provide the entertainment!  Cheers lads, it was good to see you!

My laptop battery is dying.
In short - Joe was great
Sandi Thom's camel toe was spectacular
Will post pics when I have more power.

Sounds like a great time was had! I love that Flying V, looks awesome.

Unfortunately I will miss Bonamassa in Edinburgh next week, but I would definitely love to see him live some day.

Great stuff Dave - well done for getting that close to the action. Still gtted that I can't get tickets for when he is down this way next year.

I bet the three of you were giggling like schoolboys when you spotted the camel toe.
I think I hate being indecisive.

And she had a dimply arse, as Matt gleefully pointed out between the tears and howls of laughter! I believe the backing singer was also described to me as having horsey teeth. Apparently Ms Thom is only 25, but I suspect there's some rock star age thing going and she's probably my age. But not mentally, where I've not hit puberty yet.

We were further back than the front row, but the chips, fish and mushy peas we stuffed down our gobs before going into the venue worked their olfactory magic and the ladies in front of us were swooning like, err ladies who'd been gassed. So as there was a space, I felt obliged to do the gentlemanly thing and step over the the prostrate woman to get a better view.

Personally I didn't enjoy his performance as much this time as the previous two times I've seen him. It's plain that they've been on the road for a long time and the band were so tight I think they'd have trouble passing wind. It was almost too perfect and boy does he love the adulation. Saying that, he's very, very good, but I like a bit of sloppiness in my plank plinkers. I was disappointed to see him standing in the same places for all the solos as he did the previous times I've seen him, but that's professionalism for you. But at least he'd cured his acoustic tone this time and didn't scalp the audience with its top end during his acoustic section.

I suspect it's also going to be the last time we're able to see him in a venue of this size as I think the dates for early next year are at rather larger venues.

Oh he also gurns more these days, it almost looks like he's passing a kidney stone the size of Barry White through his urethra.

As Shobet says, there was was proper toe-curling vinegar-strokes facial action going on.  Quite comedy!

It was also a very scripted performance, with little or no improvisation.  I got the distinct impression that every little phrase of playing was planned to the finest detail.  Very professional, but a little cold?

The arrogance of looking for (and expecting) the crowd appreciation was quite grating to me.  He also played about 6-7 tracks before speaking to the audience, or thanking them for the applause (which I think he did once, maybe twice, throughout the whole evening).

As you can see, mixed feelings from me and the guys on the gig.  Great, yet disappointing at the same time.....

Saw Joe last week/Wednesday in Brussels. He kicked some major ass!

I think his doing the Theremin thing is a bit silly, cheapo Pagey copy.

But he plays great and has a depth and drama to his soloing like no other. I would have liked a bit more presence in the tone, but could have been the mix or where I stood (right at the stage on the left).

Thanks Shobet
A true friend

PhillyQ - yes he used his goldtop a lot, a quilted sunburst les paul, Ernie ball baratone, Ernie Ball Albert Lee model, Ernie Ball Axis Super Sport, Ernie Ball double Neck (off which he used only one neck... because he could), Yamaha Acoustic and a Gibson 1981 heritage reissue Flying V.

I think that's all.
Oh and I got one of his plectrums which is a red Jazz III with his name on the back.
I have now lost it
