Aluminium tailpiece
« on: January 02, 2010, 11:24:15 AM »

Do they make a difference?  I'm thinking of one for my 335.

Who makes them?

cheers

You can get them here from Gotoh: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Electric_guitar,_non-trem_tailpieces/Gotoh_Aluminum_Stop_Tailpiece.html

It should give a bit more brightness and twang.

^ what Ratrod says.  I found they give a difference in tone, and a difference I like.

I like the effect that it has and pretty much try to use them all the time
We get them from Gotoh  and they are great

We have managed to finally get some chrome ones as everywhere seems to offer nickel but not chrome assuming that everybody is using for a vintage correct axe.

A little pricier but worth it for the tone

Tonepros also do one - http://www.tonepros.com/products.htm

The tonepros one is a bit expensive
I tend to favour using a Gotoh one and using the Tonepros split tailpiece studs to anchor it down 100% - works great

Never tried them, but have been meaning to try the Faber aluminium tailpiece for some time now.  I remember someone on the LPF comparing the Faber with a Pigtail tailpiece and was pleasantly surprised at how close they were (considering the Pigtail stuff costs a fortune).

And the Tonepros tailpiece is made by Gotoh anyway!

+1 to the Gotoh tailpiece with Tonepros studs.

Thanks for the link HTH, they seem to sell them in gold! I will have to buy one in a few months to test it on my new guitar :)

1960 LP junior.  the wraparound bridge is exactly 28 grams... feels like nothing in the hand.

the guitar sounds amazing for many reasons but i am convinced this is one of the important ones:

I've got one on my Swamp Ash SG.
I'm pretty  cynical about these things, but even I could detect a small amount of extra top end 'zing', and definitely more sustain.

I've got an aluminium wraparound on my LP Jr.  It definitely made a very noticeable difference when I fitted it, it seems to emphasise both bass and treble somewhat (but not in a harsh, piercing way) and the guitar is louder acoustically.

Not sure about sustain on mine, it may have actually decreased a little, but that may be because the note rings louder initially so it seems to tail off quicker.

For comparison, I have an identical Jr which still has the original zinc(?) bridge.  It sounds less lively but on the other hand seems a bit more focused and "solid" when playing chords, there's more chunk in the midrange.  I do have an aluminium bridge for that one too, it'll be interesting to see if it ends up sounding like the first one or if they're just different anyway.

I suspect the aluminium tailpiece isn't something that automatically "improves" a guitar, it's more like a way of fine tuning the tone which may suit some guitars but not others.  I've got 2 or 3 of the Gotoh tailpieces which I'm going to try on all my T-O-M guitars (eventually!).

none of those descriptions sound like anything I want or need on my Les Paul - its spot on as it is.

however, its one of those nagging things I've been meaning to try so I will undoubtedly get one at some point.

what about the replacement bridges then? - are those more lightweight and therefore 'better' (subjectively) ???

Replacement tune-o-matics?  A far as I know, Tonepros and Faber bridges are made of cast zinc, the same as most bog-standard bridges.  Callaham make one out of machined solid steel.

Pigtail make an aluminium T-O-M (and a normal zinc one), I don't think anyone else uses aluminium.

Dead Mint Club and Montreux Guitars both make aluminium tailpieces.

Full disclosure: I am a Montreux dealer.
