I've just bought a 1962 SG Standard for £1299!
« on: February 25, 2010, 01:56:19 PM »
Coda Music added a neck-broken-but-repaired '62 SG Standard to their website last night, and I've snagged it this morning.  £1350 posted, with an Epiphone hard case, and I have the weekend to approve it.  I can return it for a full refund (minus the shipping) if I'm not happy with it.

It's been stripped of most, if not all, original parts and it needs a re-fret.  However, I have a set of Throbak PAF replica pickups knocking about, plus some correct knobs/paper-in-oil caps/dial pointers, so it'll just need 4 new CTS pots (£15ish) and a re-fret by my local guy (£100ish).

£1500, used Custom Shop money, and I've got a '62 SG for YC/DC gigs.  Fingers crossed!

Why buy a cr@ppy old one, all beat-to-sh1t and back, when you can get nice new relic?

Yep, congratulations - hope it turns out alright. Even without it's original parts, and the break, I can't help wondering how it's so cheap (not that I know much about prices for these things) - but with the time for approval, I don't see how you can go wrong ...

Make sure you're absolutely ruthless when evaluating though, if it was me, I'd get sucked into "oh wow, I own a guitar made in 62!!"

Nice one Dave.  :D

That guitar wonderfully embodies the saucy look / very essence of the S.G. -and you were able to buy it with the loose change from 'Francine' . Double win !  :D

It's for 'DC gigs mate - I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.  I'm fine gigging with the Epi tone-wise, but wanted something that felt better.  That's why I was looking for a CS model.

Let's see how good this old one is.....

Cool.
Will have a certain MOJO if you can get it to play well.

I'd have concerns at that neck repair when the cat who's done it has done that shoddy a cover up. Unless that was to keep costs down or by choice.

Still, at that money, it's certainly worth a punt and you're never gonna lose cash on it.

nice score, bet it plays great.

the neck repair isn't a big deal - I had a Firebird with a headstock repair that played great and held tuning fine.

I would get the repair checked out and a nice refinish - those Throbaks are supposed to be NICE.

They are - they're currently sitting in my Korina McCarty.

I'm taking the SG over to Martin's at the weekend as he's much more clued up on woodwork than I am.  Re-wiring it isn't an issue for me, but neck repairs are!

Not sure if I'll bother with the neck re-fin.  If it's happy as it is I'll leave it alone!
