If the neck has been repaired properly then it should be stronger than it was originally. With SGs I'd be more worried about the other end of the neck, especially as I'm a heavy handed bugger.

Nice catch though. It has character! ;)

Funny you should mention that Shobet, it may have had a lesser repair at the base of the neck too.

As long as it plays well, I don't care at that price!

If it's a '62 then that makes it a Les Paul SG doesn't it?

indeed, but its transition period.  no 'les paul' on headstock after 61, no 'SG' label till 63.  most 61-63's would have still had a 'les paul' plate between fretboard and pickpup when they left the factory

if the neck repair is old and solid who cares!!   worse things have been done to these things to keep them working, a rather subtle black burst around the headstock wouldnt bother me if its old but i wouldnt expect people to do it that way now. repair techniques, and perhaps more importantly, shared knowledge on repair techniques has come a long way.

Yep, I think it could have been done better if it was done yesterday, but according to Coda the repair lacquer is covered in checking so it's an old repair.  A good sign, if it's lasted this long it must be solid?

Looking forward to checking it out tomorrow.

And I only realised earlier that if the fingerboard is original (very likely) then it's Brazilian Rosewood......

If it breaks - just get it fixed again but properly the 2nd time
I know a gypsy that does excellent headstock and gun stock repairs if you need some added mojo.... but that's a story for another day  :)

It will indeed be Brazilian rosewood, and the neck and body will be Honduran mahogany.

The body looks to have had some overspray too, but I wouldn't be too worried about that.

All the pre-64/65 Gibsons I've played have generally had great necks (Gibson went to a slimmer neck in 64/65), and SGs from that era are killer.

Vintage guitar prices have been a bit wobbly over the last year or so.

There are now a lot of guitars coming out of the woodwork, especially guitars with issues like this one, which would be of no interest to a collector, but obviously of considerable interest to a player!!

The price looks good, I'll be interested to see what you think about it.

Good stuff Dave - looking forward to a vid and some more pics (if you decide to keep it of course)
I think I hate being indecisive.

Do you think so?  Where?  Given the lacquer checking, it must be a old spray job.

That's the plan mate, that's the plan!

I couldn't pass this up in favour of a new CS model.  Proof is the playing though, so we'll see....

I was pretty sceptical about a '62 SG at this price, but I confess I 'm starting to get swept up in the general state of euphoria....!
