I have a 1989 Gibson 335 Studio (semi-hollow, no-f-holes) with Dirty Fingers pickups (maybe like a Painkiller) from the factory. The guitar sounds like a hydrogen bomb. It can clean up surprisingly well, although the Dirty Fingers are not the first choice pickup of many jazzers.
I bought this guitar new and for years, I wondered why that guitar sounded so fiery hawt, much more than any Les Paul I had ever played. I thought maybe the semi-hollow construction had something to do with it. Only later did I learn from a price guide that this guitar had come from the factory with Dirty Fingers and not something more vintage-voiced.
That said, I would not go any hotter than Rebel Yells in an f-hole hollow-body; no point in making an archtop into something it is not. If it were me, I would take advantage of the fact that an archtop can sound so fat when played more cleanly.
Also, if you get too much feedback, try stuffing the body with hand towels as B.B. King used to do.
