hollowbodies and high out put pickups
« on: March 09, 2010, 04:08:17 AM »
Hi,
Has anybody had any experience with bkp's in hollow and semihollow guitars?

I have a PRS Hollowbody Spruce that I'm thinking about replacing the pickups in. I want something with a little, or a lot more bite. I'm afraid that anything too high output will cause too much feedback. If anyone has put bkps in their hollowbodies which ones were they and what'd you think?

If it helps, this is the gear that I have currently
LP DC - SD P-rails
LP Junior Special - Wolftone meaner p 90s
JP Junior - BKP P92
LP Studio - Wolftone Fenris
THD Flexi 50
Orange Rockerverb 100
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe

I try and play everything so I don't think I want something like the warpig. I was thinking about the Rebel Yells. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 1989 Gibson 335 Studio (semi-hollow, no-f-holes) with Dirty Fingers pickups (maybe like a Painkiller) from the factory. The guitar sounds like a hydrogen bomb. It can clean up surprisingly well, although the Dirty Fingers are not the first choice pickup of many jazzers.

I bought this guitar new and for years, I wondered why that guitar sounded so fiery hawt, much more than any Les Paul I had ever played. I thought maybe the semi-hollow construction had something to do with it. Only later did I learn from a price guide that this guitar had come from the factory with Dirty Fingers and not something more vintage-voiced.

That said, I would not go any hotter than Rebel Yells in an f-hole hollow-body; no point in making an archtop into something it is not. If it were me, I would take advantage of the fact that an archtop can sound so fat when played more cleanly.

Also, if you get too much feedback, try stuffing the body with hand towels as B.B. King used to do.

I put Alnico II Mules in a Raven West hollowbody (prety much a Korean PRS clone) and I have AIV Stormy Mondays in my 335.  I have Rebel Yells in my PRS Standard 24 but woiuld not be sure of them in a hollow body as they have a mid range enphasis which might not work with a hollowbody.  If you are looking for a higher output pickup, perhaps the he Abraxas might work as they have a more neutral tone.
So many pickups, so little time
