B.K.P. 'Manhattans' : The Very Thought Of You".

Hiya Folks,

I wanted to make a quick clip of my beloved 'Manhattans' - but this time with round wound strings.  The forum regulars will recall I did a trio of clips with Manhattans / Archtop/  flatwound strings some time ago ,  then more recently samples of AII and AIV Stormy Mondays in a fully hollow Archtop with roundwound strings.

As the Manhattans are probably a bit more detailed sounding than the previous flatwound samples indicated ; AND to allow browsers a better compare the Stormy Mondays and Manhattan options in the same context - I present this quick arrangement of " The Very Thought Of You" :

http://www.box.net/shared/skpbqk3uhk

Again, no amp simulation, just Tapco interface, into basic Tracktion software - with only a 'Light reverb' filter enabled. I obviously wanted to ensure all sound clips were recorded in exactly the same way, even if they were all recorded rather 'flat'.   I have done all my sound clips with both pickups on together - and volume / tone controls full on. I feel that if you hear the 'raw' product - it's easier for you to imagine what E.Q changes you would make. I can confirm that B.K.P. Stormy II. Stormy IV. and Manhattans - all sound lovely  through a solid state amp with flat E.Q - so there is plenty of extra 'juice' to be extracted from these lovely pickups with your favourite valve amps. On balance, the Manhattans being the most restrained, the AII Stormies, sweet, but getting zingy - and the AIV Stormies, starting to 'bite' a bit and giving an edge to the finer details.

Now, it's time for me to scuttle off to actually study and practice . " Time on the instrument" - as they say.

Do not fully judge the B.K.P.  by my novice arrangements and rather basic recording methods. I had hoped Jimmy Bruno might oblige, but he was tied up in New York, so I had to step in ...

Cheers !  :)

Thanks for posting, that's some sweet playing. You have sensitivity in your playing that I just can't get in mine. I'm having difficulty trying to develop my technique and fall back on 'dig-in and be aggressive' with which I've been strangling my guitar with for the past 25 years  :?

Anyway, it's a lovely tune, is it your own arrangement?

Absolutely charming. I may well end up with a Manhattan in the El Rey.

Thanks Ken !  :)

They are all my own 'arrangements' ( a rather grand term for what I currently kick out   ) - the only deliberate 'borrowing'  being a couple of ( somewhat slowed down ! ) Joe Pass runs in " I will Say Goodbye " - as his absolutely  masterful version on the DVD " An Evening With Joe Pass" kicked this whole thing off for me, and I wanted to get those two ideas under my fingers, to better understand what he was applying to the job - and how.

Meanwhile, your encouragement is much appreciated.  :)

Very kind of you to say Choucas ( B.K.P. Jazz Club founder! )   8) . I do love the Manhattans.  E.Q adjustments can bring the  AII Stormy Monday fairly close, but only a Manhattan has that sound.

Cheers !  :D
