I'm not sure people actually decide to sing in an American accent, or that it's an effort for them to "force" one.

I suspect in most cases they do it without even thinking about it, because American-accented English is the language of rock'n'roll.  They just unconsciously copy the singing of their heroes (be they American or British).

Some of these girl signers mentioned here are not really in the same ball park as this Marina girl,

I'm sure the deaf would really enjoy Marina, she is rather hot.

To me it's not that different from BAt For Lashes
Florence and the Machine
etc etc

Could it be that some of these American accents are used to appeal to a wider audience, get radio play and more sales? I'm bet some producers work like that.

What's worse, a winey bird voice or an over done club singer?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRwgNtv29ig

I think we're stuck with the winey bird pop for a while. Until the next thing becomes the fash'. I don't mind a bit Paloma Faith and Florence. Marina and her ilk will spawn weirder shite. Did she get her image ideas from Gerry Andersons Marina? I can't see what people get out of it. Perhaps someone should start a testosterone fuelled rock revolution or just clean the BBC out of trendy Tobys and Tabathas and get some decent bands on the show. It's not the people who pay the license fee who want this rubbish its a minority. Who probably live in Crouch End.

Dave your a pedant!  :D

^

some of it probably is music label/producer pressure if they're trying to break the states.

I can't stand florence and the machine or bat for lashes, though- too experimental for me. But i like paloma and marina. Considering the stuff that passed for pop music when i was in school (and the other kids controlled the cd player- vengaboys and rubbish like that o_O ), the current stuff is pretty good, as far as i'm concerned. things are going to have to get pretty bad before it's as bad as the late 90s and early 00s...

yeah, same here. that's what happens when i sing (not that anyone would want to hear that o_O). My accent isn't a million miles off an american one, though (and seems to be getting closer every day with all the tv i watch), maybe that's why I find them easier to listen to, too. Though every time I hear a Northern Irish accent on TV, I cringe, so I'm not sure what's going on there.

Just listened to Marina and the Diamonds for the first time - that Robot song lets stuck in your head right away.  Its probably not a song I'd rush out to buy, but it's got a weird quality to it that I can't quite put my finger on.

Well, I missed most of it.

Saw Paul Weller at the end. Me and the missus stared at it in silence, and then when it finished... there was still silence... and then we looked at each other and both burst out laughing. I'm not sure whether this was because of his hair, or because we were relieved the other one thought it was sh1t as well  (we kinda like him, but he always looks like he takes hisself so seriously!)

However, you chaps have piqued my interest. This poor Marina girl... never heard of her, but how bad could she be? So I am at this moment on Spotify listening to her ...

Sorry folks, I kinda like her stuff (EDIT: I absolutely LOVE her stuff) Started with I am not a Robot - really enjoyed it (EDIT: but I think it's weak compared to some of the other songs).

.... So I ended up listening to more. I assume this is her first album. Does she write her own sh1t? Does she play instruments? If she does - and this is her first one - she's potentially as good as Kate Bush. I have to admit that I'm one of the people who regard that lady as something of a genius, but I remember when I first saw Wuthering Heights I thought it was utter cack... (still do, actually ).

I can hear a lot of Kate Bush in some of her backing vox - but I expect her folks have got all KBs records. And her range is the same, she's an alto really - so when she goes higher she has to go into her "head-voice" (equivalent of male falsetto). But she's got quite a strong head-voice, and she's not afraid to mix the two - and that's the same effect you got out of KB early on: a strong lower voice, and then a sudden jump to something that sounds like it's a different voice.

I've heard over half the album now - it's actually the first "new" album I've actually wanted to get in years and years...

Still - I do imagine that she might not be very good live at the moment. But if it's on tonight, I'll see if I can remember to watch.

On the accents thing - that was what I going to start talking about until her album distracted me - as a singer myself, you're kind of stuck with what comes out of your gob and what made you want to sing in the first place. With a lot of effort you can steer it, but you've got to figure out what you want to be first. I'm continually having to eradicate weird americanisms that sneak in - and I don't even know I'm doing them.

But this girl is completely different to that - she's consciously going all over the place with it. She's using accents when she wants, she's stretching and bending sounds to suit her purpose and the song/performance. Some of it works, some of it doesn't so well, but overall it's a stunning effort.

EDIT: Heard all of it now - not a single song I wanted to fast forward...

To be fair, it's probably the first new album you've listened to in years and years...  :P

I do have to put up with stuff from the missus, sometimes.

No, I have to admit the last one I got this excited about was Different Class. I've got some Franz Ferdinand etc, but I probably won't bother listening to them again.

Does she play an instrument/write then? The songs/vocals sound like she might be a singer/songwriter, and a piano player.

She certainly writes her own stuff.  And turns out she's a solo artist, "The Diamonds" aren't a band:

Just looked at the writing credits for her album - she wrote 7 and co-wrote the other 6.

(Are we being a little sexist here?  If it was a man I think we'd just assume he wrote his own songs, but if it's a woman we feel the need to ask the question.... )

Probably more because she's human and not the Chimpanzee one would expect to have written that bilge.

nah, i asked because she's a pop star and i don't trust pop stars, whether male or female, i've seen too many where it was claimed he/she wrote his/her own songs, only to find 4 professional writers' names followed by the popstar in question.

I don't assume a man writes his own songs either.

And obviously writing the song all on your own is no achievement if the song sucks

EDIT: actually, if anything I'm also suspicious because of sexism... but not my own sexism, the sexism of the music industry. it's not a coincidence that almost every single female popstar or singer is ridiculously beautiful (with the odd exception thrown in, either to attempt to counteract the accusations of sexism, or because the music is so good that they think they can sell it anyway). Considering she fits the mould, it makes me suspicious. They pick based on looks first, then malleable personality (i.e. will she do what the record company tells her?), then finally musical ability.

I can't believe I missed this thread and ended up watching it last night!  It was rubbish.

Maria and the diamonds were shitee as well, different I suppose but style over substance.  She'll probably win the Mercury though.

Paul Weller made me want to jump out of the window.  He didn't have style or substance!

Andy, this is for you....

I didn't think last nights episode really did anything new. Four of teh bands have been on before, nothing really that new and exciting, and a lack of a real big name. Soem of teh upcoming episodes have some good lineups...
