Twinfan's biggest gig challenge tonight - and I'm nervous!
« on: April 17, 2010, 03:21:27 PM »
Following on from the post about Martin being in hospital, I think most people know we're in a band together.  And we have a gig booked for tonight!

I'm now rushing around re-formatting a set list that will work as a four-piece.  We've never done this before, or planned for it, so I'm now trying to learn guitar parts and working out which tracks we can actually play!  This will be my first proper gig in a one-guitar band, plus I do a lot of backing vocals too.

No pressure then

Oh well, at least I'll have a bit more space on stage!

I hope it went well Dave. I have been in that situation more than a few times but I suspect it will go well and you will enjoy it.

Cheers guys  :)

It went fine in the end, and the punters enjoyed it so that's what mattered.  Sounded a bit empty with only one guitar!

Twinfan

pleased to hear it all went well, although I'm sure that you must have felt very aware of Martin's absence.

This post was my encouragement to follow the link and listen to what you do, you have a very capable and cool band there Twinfan - you gigs must be loads of fun for yourselves and your audiences alike!

Glad it worked out alright :D

Once you've got over the first song or two, it's usually quite refreshing, isn't it?

The worst (scariest) one I ever had to do was in my last band. We were a two guitar set-up where I did the lead vocals. The bassist couldn't make it, so we decided to go as a three-piece, with me on bass and vocals. I can play bass ok (ish), but bass and front-man is a different kettle of fish. We did two rehearsals - first was dire, second not quite so bad, but certainly not giggable. We decided that "something'll happen, it'll be alright on the night..."

I figured out I ought to listen to the Police for a few days - and discovered how Sting managed it. When we turned up, I showed them in the soundcheck the approach I was gonna take - and the other two got really scared . In the end it was the best gig we ever did in that band!

... I dunno, it takes you right out of your comfort zone, half the on-stage cues are missing, and you're worried that you won't be able to deliver for the punters, but somehow it seems to work out and you learn new stuff about the line-up (and yourself)... hope there's still room for Martin, with your new-found skills, when he gets back!

Ha ha!  Or course!

The "call and answer" part we usually do in one song was interesting!  I decided on the fly to do the call in first position and the answer an octave up.  Worked OK in the end!

I decided, and changed, a lot of stuff on the fly which was a challenge, but I guess I must be OK at hearing what's not quite right and working out and alternative there and then.

Definitely one for the "experience" drawer!

Hey Dave, hats off to you for pulling it off but to be honest from what I've seen and heard I didn't doubt that. However, and more importantly, I hope Martin is ok and recovers/ is on the mend. Sorry if I've missed some threads but please pass on my best wishes!
