Wonders Of The Solar System
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:35:20 AM »
With all this chat about astonomy/astrology/physics etc going on, has anyone been watching the series "Wonders Of The Solar System" on the Beeb?

It's really good, very engaging and accessibly, even for a buffoon like me.

Incidentally, the presenter, Professor Brian Cox, used to be in D:Ream - and was responsible for their 1997 anthem "Things Can Only Get Better"...

Thoroughly enjoyable series, and Prof. Cox is a bit of a legend. His response to fears over the LHC is the stuff of legend. More smart people should be on the box, in the papers and in the streets saying "would you ever wise up, ye bollix?".

Yes I've thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I recorded them all. I love this subject but can only really get on with it at this level.

An epic series in more than 1 way. Brilliantly presented and allowed even idiots like me to understand what the hell has been, is & will be going on in the universe

News for you, most of it is still theoretic.

I watched the second one (I think it was), but it seemed to take an age for him to even get on to the theory of conservation of angular momentum. After that, it sped up and was quite interesting (it was about Saturn's rings), although I can't help thinking the whole series was just an excuse to get him to travel to essentially every exotic and interesting location on earth!

Fair play to him, though, he's earned it, and frankly us scientists have a tough time making our cases, getting funding, and getting job security as it is, I certainly don't begrudge him this success - it's clearly not been handed to him on a plate, he knows his beans and, more importantly: knows how to communicate them!

yeah, i quite enjoyed the show.  i was glad to see that he didn't make some of the more far fetched and fantastical claims that some programmes have made on such subjects.

also, did any of you see him on the Jonathon Ross show?  he seemed genuinely convinced that Ross was gonna stick his hand into liquid nitrogen! of course, that would have been the funniest thing on the show in a while :)

[DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS- DO IT ON YOUR OWN RISK, OR BETTER YET DON'T DO IT AT ALL. DON'T DO IT AT ALL, THAT'S WHAT MY LAWYERS ARE TELLING ME  ] I think, if you're very quick, you can stick your hand in liquid nitrogen. just the tips of your fingers, and just skite it very quickly near the surface. One of our lecturers did it, anyway, as far as i can remember. I've certainly spilled droplets of it on myself (burns).

obviously if you submerge your whole hand for any length of time, you're going to be screwed.

The pocket of air surrounding your hand acts to insulate your skin briefly. Wet hands + liquid nitrogen = PAIN. Dry hands - yeah you can dip them in briefly without causing 'too much' damage.
I work with liquid nitrogen a lot, you quickly gauge what you can and can't do. But the key point is: Liquid nitrogen + Eyes = Blindness. ALWAYS wear safety goggles!

yeah, i thought it was something like that.

nitrogen + latex/rubber gloves (the kind you wear in a lab, not the kind afghan dave probably likes) = more pain.

Also look out if youre letting/making it califract around on desks (fun for 5 minutes) - if it gets in your socks it hurts. But you can dip your fingers in it quickly.

yeah, pouring it on the floor was good fun. instant smoke machine. pouring it down the sink (when there was water in the sink) was pretty funny too.

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I in no way endorse doing this or suggest doing this yourself, liquid nitrogen (or anything that cold) is dangerous.
