Spotify has some nice new features
« on: May 01, 2010, 10:25:13 PM »
You can link it to your facebook or twitter accounts. Save your playlists and publish them on social networking sites and vice versa.
I know some of you don't have or like FB but this feature means that you can effectively become an on line DJ for want of a better phrase.

I also hate facebook

I can find no reasonable way that one can take 'online DJ' and make C-O-C-K out of it.

But then I am pissed.

Sobered up yet lads?  I know some of you hate Facebook, it did say that in my first post. I was thinking, the "what are you listening to right now' thread that our old friend JT started some years ago, could benefit from something like this.
We've had lots of threads, for instance the thread about what music is tight last year. With a playlist of examples, you could illustrate what you mean to others and for them its a one click effort in one window.
As for the rest of Facebook, yes its full of idiots but that is the world we live in anyway. Facebook is only a template, its what people put on it. I've seen some very good ones. Twitter is a lot better than i thought it was going to be. Tons of guitar, music and science headlines. Did you know Mark there were 8 species of deep sea fish discovered off the coast of Greenland recently!

I don't do Facebook or Twitter, and don't intend to start (I waste enough of my life on the net already).  Nonetheless, this seems a good idea (although those letters "D" and "J" always make my blood boil a little).
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

I take your point with the D and the J. I did say for want of a better phrase. What shall I re-phrase it as? Choon chooser?  :P

Well if you net luddites don't care for these things then I really think you're missing out. It's music and you can communicate it with people who like the same things. No more copy and pasting text into youtube which doesn't have the bitrate of Spotify. Anyway I've found some of my old pals on FB, so what's the worse that can happen? There are lots of discussion groups for bands out there. Twitter is worth it for the Charlie Higson tweets alone! The guitar and music companys on Twitter is vast. Get a smartphone, well that's how i do it.

Nah, don't worry about it!

It's just seeing the term DJ...... it's always pissed me off that people go on about DJs as if they're these supremely talented musical geniuses.  And it pisses me off even more when you see these "youth projects" which teach da kidz useful skillz like DJing and rapping, as if they're essential services the nation is crying out for....  :x

Plus it makes me think of Tim Westwood.

Sorry.  Way off topic.

Facebook's ever (d)evolving user privacy policy is a worry. The site is essentially on one big data gathering machine for targeted advertising. They even collect data about you from other online sources. Ooh and here's the doozy, but then you've probably read the terms and conditions for using the site so are well aware that the data they gather, or anything you post or upload can be exploited by them without license and shared with any company they choose.

Ever questioned why Facebook has all this integration with these external sites and services? All that aggregated information about you is a marketers wet dream, they have detailed information about what you read, look at, listen to, what you say etc. The more you put up on the site and the more data you pull from outside sources into Facebook the better profile you build of yourself for them to exploit.

It's quite interesting who funded Facebook as well, have a gander at Accel Partners. I find it curious that Accel's manager is directly connected to a board member of another venture capital firm called In-Q-Tel who have a focus on data mining technologies.

Hmm data mining technologies and all that detailed information about 400,000,000 odd users.

Tin foil hat time
If you're interested you can google any of those companies so that you can see for yourself who funds them. In-Q-Tel is a bit of an eye opener when you see who started them.
Takes tin foil hat off

So this luddite will remain weary of the joined up internet and let you more adventurous web travellers lead the way. ;)

As for when you say DJ, I have a mental image of Saturday night discos and asking for some rock, only to get Kiss' Crazy Nights played at me. Rock and $%&#ing roll.

Another old luddite here

Very interesting what you say about Facebook there Shobet... I'm not on it, and haven't even considered twitter... like Philly, I spend enough time on the internet already.

And "DJ" means roughly the same for me - except substitute Kiss's Crazy Nights with Status Quo's Caroline, Saxon's 747, or the Police's Message in a Bottle (!) ... long time since I went near anything that required someone described as a "DJ"...

So are we saying that these modern DJs (post 1982 or so) do something other than spin platters after introducing them with "and this one is for Sharon, Gary wants to dance with you..."

Having said that, I quite like Spotify (listening to SAHB British Tour 76 at the moment) - I got the e-mail about the new sh1t, but I can't see any difference on my Spotify screen... luckily! I really hope they don't f@ck it up with "improvements"...

Not really, but they've somehow managed to create a mystical aura of "mad skillz".  Oh, and they've taken up "residence" in pubs so it's now impossible to have a drink and a chat.

The ones you mentioned are still working.... at weddings and office parties.

A certain Mr Law may take exception to that!

So they gather some info on you. So what. I don't use my real name online anyway so I couldn't give a monkeys. Anyway store loyalty cards do this sort of thing too. I don't have one of those for that reason. I use usenet through useneXt a lot. That's a great way to fill up iPods cheaply. Premier League football is all out there too as I'm sure your aware of.
Twitter is lot different to FB. You basically subscribe to people/companys/organisations or whatever interests you. On you home page you get headlines announcing things they are doing or have discovered or done. You click on the link that comes with it, if ones there and get the full story. Music radar have some great stuff going on. It channels stuff that interests you into your phone or pc very efficiently. But if these things don't float your boat......

I don't like DJs either and I empathise with you. They are a bunch of w**kers. Tim Westwood, is he that wigga thy use to be on radio one in the 90's and was shot at and wouldn't stop banging on about it?

Yeah, he's a fifty-something bishop's son from Suffolk who talks like he's from "da hood", calls people "dawg", does those "bust a cap in yo' ass" hand movements and plays "hip hip joints" on Radio 1.

He's the most ridiculous being in the universe.

I don't watch football it seems to be played professionally by lovely boys with expensive haircuts.

Usenet filling up iPod's cheaply? I presume you mean all that free music on there? All I ever used usenet for was for pinching stuff and porn.
