Pickups for Les Paul Baritone?
« on: June 11, 2010, 02:00:23 PM »
Hi folks!

as already can be read in the topic-line, I am looking for new Pickups for my recently acquired Epiphone Lp Baritone (27,75", Mahogany body, Marple top and neck, Rosewood fingerboard).

The Guitar will be used for a Experimental-Tech-Death Band/Jamproject, and we plan tuning down to G#.
There will be quite some clean parts (I'd say 20%), so it should be able to produce 2 nice clean tones, one warmer (neck-Pu?) and one sparklier but colder one(bridge-Pu?)... the Guitar funnily enough has a pushpull-poti and therefore comes with the possibility of coil-splitting.
From the bridge-Pu in high-gain, I would like to get a "huge" and brutal, modern and organic sound, but not muddy or undefined, as I do not only play powerchords and singlenotes.
The neck-Pu should produce a fluid, singing and sustaining, harmonically rich sound, suited not only for fast sweeping but also for some more emotional solos and melody lines.

What would you guys think will suit best for the purpose?

I thought about a C-pig or a Nailbomb in the bridge, but I am not decided yet.
for the Neck position I am absolutely undecided ...  :?

Maybe you could help me?  :D

cheers, Daniel

C-pig for the bridge is a good call. I would normally suggest PK bridge, too - and it's probably a good call for you, but something is also making me say: Miracle Man.
For the neck, I think it has to be a cold sweat!

PPS welcome to the forums

PPPS possibly should also consider a lower-output pickup, too. I have put clips up of a black dog bridge in my 6-string custom baritone (WezV Vociferator). The amp gain is fairly low on those clips (and still it gets brutal!) but it can also be made to get a lot smoother and more modern.

So, first about the Painkillers: I already have decided to upgrgade a Schecter Blackjack with those, and to me it feels wierd, having the same PuPs in 2 Guitars ;)
About the Miracle Man i totally forgot.
The Cold Sweat for the neck sounds nice ... but wouldn't it get too muddy with this type of guitar and the tuning being so low?

about output:
I know, that you don't need that much gain or drive with such low tunings, still I rather prefer dialling the amp's gain lower ... but maybe there's a reason why this would be worse?

Edit:
Pic :)

I'm gonna have to agree on the C-Pig in the bridge.

And absolutely no contest. Cold Sweat for the neck.
