I hate internet scammers!
« on: January 03, 2011, 10:00:48 PM »
Ok scammers is nothing new really. What is new is that a) they even pretend to be interested in musical equipment (my 5150) and b) they seem to have discovered the use of online translators for German!
I keep getting really badly translated messages from people with the usual scammer tactics... which make my feet cringe! The worst part is they don't understand the replies I have send them.... argh....

Not sure why I'm posting this... partly disbelief!

If it's an obvious scammer I never bother responding!

Speaking of scammers, read this: http://gretschpages.com/forum/garage-sale/gretsch-white-penguin-for-cheap/36149/page1/

The story really starts to kick off at page 3.

Wow ratrod!
I browsed that whole thread! CRAZY!
I wonder what bands in Boston he ripped off. I know guys from boston hardcore bands, I also know a label from around a number of years ago that went under and I lost money on some records I tried to buy.

Toby chose the wrong forum to scam someone on this time. Much like this forum it's a relatively small and tight community.

Spreading the word might help to get Rick his money back and at least prevent Toby from scamming anyone ever again.

A chap on the Birds and Moons (PRS) forums has several arrested scammers to his name. Along with some massively amusing abuse while he's stringing them along too.

Twinfan can confirm the antics!

I tried to buy a guitar off someone on a forum a couple of years back, the guy didn't ship & disappeared, but as I paid through Google they refunded me and borked his account without too many questions. Annoying only because all other forum trades I've been involved in have worked great.

Anyway, if scammers bring you down you can always have a look at this: http://www.419eater.com/html/okorie.htm

Warning: Involves permanent physical damage to particularly dense scammer.

That was an interesting read (on the Gretch forum) and it was good to see the support that the member got and a good outcome too. Sometimes there is justice in the world.

its unity against a guy though.
its different when the issue is a store. so to speak. this is probably due to the number of happy customers vs the one disgruntled guy who had a bad time ratio.

I mean, did anybody really think twice about dealing with sounds great after the ordeal i went through? probably not. and soldano still distribute through them... whatever.

but... that said... I've had more recent dealings with a certain spot in london that really opened my eyes to the hogwash some people in some guitar shops will tell you in order to make a sale. I mean, from dangerous advice to selling me guitars from questionable sources.

I find it pushes you to stick to what you know  and trust. Like that little shop in Ormskirk i got my charvel from... young guys working there, but they told me straight and where really helpful and clued up. In london im now down to only buying strings from 2 shops for various reasons.

EDIT: added a point i forgot to mention
