Watched the Thin Lizzy documentary on iPlayer last night, it was very good. Highly recommended even for non-Lizzy fans, if such a thing exists  :lol:

He looks like he never eats anything, literally "wasted"!

I saw the last half hour on the repeat last night, so getting closer to seeing the whole thing.  I thought they were a bit dismissive of John Sykes, I know he wasn't there long but my memory of that time was that he helped properly revitalise the band after a few years of wishy-washiness (even though Phil and Scott were still struggling with their addictions).  And they ignored the fact that Sykes, more than anyone, kept the band going in recent years (probably mostly for the money, but still...!)

I'm going to watch this on iPlayer tonight, but I'm surprised if they are dismissive of John Sykes' contributions to the band, as Thunder and Lightning is the album that got me into Thin Lizzy in the first place and sounds a lot more inspired than some of the other music that they hd produced prior to that album, seemed like a return to form.

the iron maiden one was great. The fact being at their age, and doing so many shows over such a period would be hard for anyone. Was a bit worried that after travelling nearly every day for 5 weeks and say 4 shows a week minimum, bruce dickinson was still allowed to fly a HUGE plane in between, full of gear and pissed roadies  8)

It's like the band (possibly mainly Gorham) has decided to disown anything post Black Rose
Chinatown, Renegade and Thunder and Lightning all get overlooked.

And they are dismissive of the band getting too "heavy Metal"
It is the reason that Sykes is also excluded from the current reunion lineup

Sykes was brought into the band to give it more firepower in 1981/2 as Lizzy were losing ground to all the NWOBHM groups
Coverdale recruited him for Whitesnake for much the same reason

Thunder and Lightning was the album that I got into and Cold Sweat was the single that made me go "wow" and I'm sure that is true for many other fans who later dug into the earlier catalogue

Actually listening to 'Thunder & Lightning' on the train
home and (for me,YMMV) I think it sounds unmistakeably
like Thin Lizzy, despite it being heavier.

Its the sound of a band remaining current while retaining what made them great in the first place

Doesn't Sykes have writing credits on the Whitesnake album? If so I doubt he needs the money.

Yes, I think he co-wrote nearly all the tracks on "1987", so in theory that's a nice little earner - unless, in the grand old music biz tradition, he got shafted somehow.

Still, if he does have money I'd have thought he'd have better things to do than play old Lizzy material for the last 15 years.  Maybe he just really likes the songs...?
