Warpig/Nailbomb going doomyhardcoremetal (AxeFX/Sup 2.0) w/Vox
« on: January 24, 2011, 09:39:58 AM »
Hi folks,

long time not been here   :D

this time i wanna fish for feedback for this song  :P

http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10133641

It is a song of my "real" band AlienLimbSign's first demo.

The cd was recorded at home with the followin equipment  :) :

Drums: Roland HD1 - Superior 2.0
Bass: Cheapo 5-String - AxeFX
Vox: Brutal Shouter - Rode N1
RyGuitar: Ibanez RG7321 with Nailbomb - AxeFX
LdGuitar: Ibanez RG1527 with Warpig - AxeFX

It was the first recording-a-complete-band for me so if you can tell me somethin improving bout the production i ll realy appreciate it ... even if there is nothin to improve i d like to know it

So ... if you got somethin to say you don t need to hold back ...

PLZ LEAVE A LITTLE COMMENT

Greatz M

Aye, not bad. It lacks a little density and intensity that this manner of thing is, to my ears, but its well enough tracked and mixed

Listen to Neurosis much? ;)

A big thank you for your comments,

@Madsakre ... realy pleased to read that you like it that much  :D ... yeah if listened to crowbar and down a while

we have a 3-track demo cd out ... the price is 3 euro ... sent me a pm if you d like to have it ... the longplayer will hopefully be out in summer ... our drummer is suffering with a broken patella so we quit all activities and do "homework" ... it sucks

@MDV ... thank you ... can you go a little more in depth with your critix ... your suggestions where the main reason to buy both of my bareknuckles  :) ... and your advices where right at that time  8)

i ve heard this neurosis comparison more than once last time ... no haven t heard them ever ... think i should do it today

i d be pleased to receive some more critix or comments ... maybe some orders

Its a bit tough to 'critique' so to speak, this, because my comments were just based on my expectation for this sort of style, which is based on neurosis, old man gloom and to an extent crowbar (you sound like a cross between the 3, musically, to me). You didnt do anytihng *wrong* or *badly*, imo, its just taste.

But as far as that taste/expectation go, I find it as I said...lacks density and intensity. Have a listen to Neurosis "The Doorway" and Old Man Gloom "Sleeping with the snakes". They each have a similar vibe to parts of the vibe of this and they each have intros with just one guitar so you can hear it. I think, a bit more gain (dont overdo it though), a little less in the 400-ish to 900ish 'mids-mids' range, a bit more in ~1.5 to 2.5k for more inyourfaceness and bump the 120-250 meat range and mesh it more carefully with the bass (which is good btw).

Just suggestions, feel free to take or leave. I often hate people on the net giving comments on my work thats basically what they want it to be, not what I want it to be, and have ruined mixes trying to please other people; do what sounds right to you, but the above is my advice.

Hi MDV and thank you for your advice ...

it is as always realy helpful on many ways ... it is always better to get some
profound hints as to poke around in the fog ...

i will at first listen to the mentioned bands ... to get what you ll mean with that vibe
though it is not realy cool but i have to confess i ve never heard a song from neurosis before
and they seem to be some kind of pioneers for some dudes ...

a more nooby question ... how far would you go with a bump in the low mid range ??? ... my monitors seem not to work fine below 200 hz (just 6'' speakers)

anyway ... a big big thank you for your comments and critix ... would be fine if you write back

The low mids - dont overdo it, its a delicate area of a mix. Too little and its thin, too much and its boomy. Trust your ears, reference the hell out of material that you want it to sound  like.

If your monitors are getting untrustworthy round that area, its because of the room. Get some rockwool, put it up in the corners, like this:

Thats my room. Its small and therefore has lots of acoustic problems. The walls are white. Anything thats not gear (amps, monitors etc) thats not white there is rockwool wrapped in fabric. Its floor to cieling in the corners and at the side reflection points and the back of the room as well. Acoustic foam stuck to the ceiling for that reflection point. This is what it took to get the low end in the room under control, and get an (at least reasonably) accurate monitoring position.

In the mean time, get some ATH-M50s. No headphone is to be relied upon on its own for mixing, but they're the best I've come across for it yet.

Hi and many THX for the comments

@Nadz1lla ... glad to read that you like it ... realy appreciate it ... and yeah ... the Axe is the best i ve ever owned equipment wise and i don t know where i would be as a guitarist if i hadn t bought it  :D

@ MDV ... wow ... do you have a map where you can see how to walk to your chair  ... this room looks realy like a mess HAHAHA ... but anyway ... MANY MANY thanks to you for the advice ... me room looks more the opposite ... less equipment and no white (all walls stuck with accoustic foam) ... i think my issues to get the lows/low mids are my ears or my monitors or i overdid it with the foam but that wouldn t mean that the other points are wrong  8) ... so i ll go and buy the ATH-M50 soon ... i need new headphones anyway  :) ... and use em with my focusrite saffires VRM ... maybe that helps for the next recordings

A BIG THANK YOU and i hope i can get more comments if we record our first longplayer in summer, or when i post some sound snippets soon (hahaha)

That's some good stuff man! Nice tone and I like how you're vocalist can still stand tall with the sparse arrangement in the beginning.

Another good manufacturer of headphones for mixing is Ultrasone. They are very comfortable and what you hear is as accurate frequency wise as any monitor you would ever find. There's no curve or dampening to make things sound better so they will not flatter bad mixes. I have two pairs. Started with the HFI 450 and then went and bought the PRO 750 pair a year or so later. The first time I used the HFI's I was listening to Floyd, Sigur Ros, Meshuggah and Arch Enemy. Was like I had never heard the bands before. Detailed and accurate are just not descriptive enough. Ultrasone uses a different approach, they bounce the sound off of your ear instead of blasting it right in. You have the perception of the sound being in front of you instead of that super-wide distortion of the stereo spectrum. Those ATH-M50s are a solid choice as well. Very comfortable listening, you can wear them all day. See if you can't try a few.

Dude, foam stuck to the walls does nothing to low end. Or next to nothing.

I also have pro750s and find them to have too much low end, suppressed mids (its all there, but the levels are wrong) and frankly weird metallic top end. I dont trust them. The s-logic doesnt work very consistently either. I much prefer my athm50s, and my HD25s for that matter.

The ultrasones sound the 'nicest' though....but by the same property they make mixes sound too nice!
