I currently have a Holy Diver in my les Paul which I LOVE. it's great. Very smooth and can get agressive when you need it too.

But I'm curious about trying a Black dog since lower output is more my thing as I like to let the amp do the work.
Anyone have experience with Black Dogs playing Opeth style metal? Can it produce a Thick, open and tight sound? (not too tight)

I have a set of Black Dogs in my Edwards LPC and absolutely love 'em for some metal. The combination of this guitar and my Splawn Quick Rod is crushing!

Not exactly the style of metal you had in mind but here's a clip I did with my brother a few years ago: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=6928603. The right channel is my the Edwards w/ Black Dogs and left channel is my brother's Edwards LP with Nailbombs. This was a direct-to-computer recording done with the Line 6 X3 Live so the tone could be a lot better but you should get the idea.  :)

EDIT: I almost forgot that I had this other clip done completely with the same guitar but using REAL amps. The playing is sloppy as hell in parts but again it should at least give you an idea. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=8295375

Jon Schaffer  :D

He's the exact reason I got the set of Black Dogs to begin with...

Not a les paul, but as Fernando mentioned, I did use black dogs (not any more, I have the aftermath now and much prefer the higher output). They got properly filthy and no mistake! That's through a 5150-II though, so more gain than you can shake a stick at was available.

Thanks,  WezV here on the forums made it. Do a search here for 'Vociferator' and you'll find a few topics with lots of pics. It used to have a black dog (in those pics) but now has an aftermath, which is properly, properly brutal :)

I'm a big fan of the HDs and the Black Dogs. Best HBs from bkp i've used so far.

The HD is more progressive sounding though and can do modern metal no prob, but the Black Dog has less 'push'.
That depends on the type of metal... I'm getting a great Alice In Chains thing with the Black Dogs for example (although the HD is THE Jerry Cantrell pickup..).

I really don't know if the BD will do a better Opeth sound than the HD...

nice to hear that  :D

I ordered a Black Dog to replace an Aftermath that's currently paired with a Mule in my '73 Gibson LP Custom
the same guitar also had Cold Sweats, Nailbombs and MCP Afwayu/2nd Degree Black Belt, which is Jerry's current pickups (the BKP's still kicked their asses, though)

I absolutely loved the Holy Diver I had in my early 90's Hurricane jap Les Paul copy
it gets much closer to Jerry's tones than the JB and Afwayu (which is a great pickup, but way too bass heavy and metal sounding)

if the Black Dog gives me the Holy Diver thickness but with my Riff Raff openness, I guess my search will be over

I loved the Nailbombs, Cold Sweats and the Aftermath, but they were getting too aggressive for my band, which is quite heavy, but I use a lot of semi-clean stuff through high gain amps (I never switch to actual clean channels)
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

The Black Dog would be an excellent choice for what you've mentioned. That said, it's more than capable of pretty much any style out there. Personally I feel that Nailbombs are the definitive Opeth pickup, but if you want a lower output pickup, the Black Dog should be your first port of call.

Eric, I think you will rather enjoy the Black Dog ;)

Eric, we seems to have some tastes/interests in common here. I think you will love the Black Dog, although i feel it's much 'throatier' than the Riff Raff in my '82 Japanese Greco LPC which is quite tonally balanced for a LP.

Sorry to the OP for the slight hijack  ;)
