Need Help Deciding whats right for me!
« on: March 28, 2011, 10:35:40 PM »
Hey guys, new BKP user here.

Tim suggested the Ceramic Nailbomb and The Aftermath.

I play a gibson les paul silverburst, I've got an sh-4 JB in it now. I've always been happy with that pickup, it got me that Adam Jones tone through my splawn quickrod.

I play a lot of Tool, Messugah, Periphery, Lamb of god.

Basically I want to find the tightest, mid heavy, searing pickup that BK has to offer. Something that will be considerably tight, I want it to really rip through the LP.

Thanks a lot!!

well, that's the aftermath
but I replaced the aftermath in my les paul custom with a holy diver, which is much much better for Tool, and although it's no near as hot as the aftermath, it has a similar voicing (I was expecting it to sound much darker)
and when I turn my vintage maxon GE601 on (I use the equalizer as a booster, like Adam Jones), in the same settings as I had with the aftermath, it sounds just as huge, but warmer and less scratchy while still very tight with the booster
for a Quickrod (or a Diezel as well), I'd definitely order a holy diver or nailbomb (which I also had in the same guitar) over a ceramic model
but if you're only interested in tightness + mids, then you want the aftermath or the painkiller
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks for the fast and detailed reply brother!! Even BKP forum is second to none!!

I'm one of those players that can morph the pickup to sound good in any style. Finger dexterity and feeling get you a long ass way with guitar playing.

But if a pickup is muddy then there isn't much I can do about it. I can work with an overly tight pickup.

Basically I'd rather have too much tightness, than too little.
The Ceramic Nailbomb sounded better to me than the Regular nailbomb.

I think if I wouldn't have talked to Tim, I would have bought a Painkiller.

IDK I'm still so confused on which pickup would be right for me.

Out of the bands you mentioned I only know Lamb of God. For that kind of tone I would neither use a HD nor an alnico Nailbomb. I would follow Tim's suggestions on that one.

Cheers Stephan

Thanks for the reply and the advice. Unforunately that is the last band on the tone list for me.

I think I might be going with the aftermath, which was Tims first suggestion.

I agree totally!! shite he makes them, I trust his word. I'd be ignorant if I didn't.

He just suggested the Ceramic Nailbomb, he said that sounded like more of the one that suited me.
But when I listen to clips of both, I like the aftermath much more. That's why I'm considering that.

The Aftermath is tight as all hell, middy, grindy... It's the perfect pickup for "djent", but also for technical death metal.

The C-Bomb reminds me of a Cold Sweat on steroids. It's massive, tight, More lows than the aftermath, but not as much grind.

Thanks a lot bro! I play a lot of Prog/ Math rock type shite.

Like Tool but more Djent- like.

So I guess I'm looking to use an Aftermath to take a "not so out there genre" and use the aftermath to spice that style up a bit...

But if the C Nailbomb, is really the way to go I'll choose that.

the c-bomb is A BIT scooped. not really, but has got more lows and highs (and less mids than the alnico version) than the painkiller, and lacks its hi-mid spike, so sounds metal-zone style scooped in comparison! :)
it's very tight in the right guitar, but to me your tone specs sound much more like a painkiller. of course i'm talking about the PK because i never played an AM, but everyone says it's more or less like a PK with more balanced mids, so i'd give it a try!
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

@dheim!! Thanks brother, sounds like you really understand my needs!! I was aiming 100% at the Painkiller then, I heard the aftermath!! I think I'll be pulling the trigger on that!!!

Badass pickups in general!!
