Dual 2W amp rig in action -- live clip
« on: April 05, 2011, 12:02:57 AM »
My band went into SIR Studios in NYC yesterday for album preproduction and I had the chance to play the dual 2W amp setup at gig volume; it worked a treat! No problems being heard by anyone and the stage-volume balance was spot on. Even after I exported the tracks, the amps are within .5dB of each other. I didn't monitor anything through headphones, I just set it up to what sounded balanced on stage. There was no monitoring done during recording; we just played live, as normal.

Aside from a couple of vocal rides, this is 100% live in-room: We set up on stage, mic'd up the gear, and then set up the vocal mic off the stage.

i love the tone! you can hear the strings definitely. from what i hear you're definitely after a certain tone! i would certainly use more gain than you however. must be damn fun to bang on that guitar :D with your amp setup you must be the quietest and most efficient rock guitar player.

what are the amps? LNT and jet city?

The amps held up against the kit and a 60w valve bass amp (an old Traynor).  I was there and can tell you that the room sound was really well balanced.  Everything was recorded live and the room mic picked up a really balanced sound.  There was no EQ or compression on any of the mics.  They went into a Soundcraft Spirit RacPac mixer and then direct out into the Yamaha.  The room was 40' x 24' with about a 16' ceiling and was well damped and the recorded sound was spot on for the room sound.
So many pickups, so little time

The amps are a little night train and an east amplification studio 2.

Finally got to listen to this at a decent volume.

And i must say i really enjoyed the tones everything slots together really nicely which surprised me for a live recording.

You definitely know what you were going for and achieved it full on i say!

As Tony said, the bulk of my tone is from the East Studio 2. I use a LNT to fill in the volume on the other side of the stage. Speakers are Eminence Wizards, which are essential for low wattage amps.

It's a '67 Traynor Bass Master.

Phil was a TREMENDOUS help that day!

The drum overheads were direct into the Yamaha HDD. The vocal mic went into an SSL channel strip. All other mics when through the Soundcraft.

Thank you, sir.

Phil can tell you -- when I first met him, I had 3 pet peeves re: guitar playing

#1 was I HATED power valve distortion. I now crave it and it's a very big part of my tone.

#2 was very low wattage amps. Since then I've gone from a 100W head to a 30W head to a 2W head!

#3 was P90s. I still sound cr@p when I use them, however. :)
