BM logos are utterly ridiculous - whats the point of a logo at all if you can't read it? (wtf!!!!)  :?

I perhaps unsurprisingly knew them all, though Prosanctus Inferi I only ever heard of by way of a "Daft metal band logos" thread.

I actually think most of them are pretty readable, bar Leviathan and Prosanctus Inferi. But then maybe I'm just used to such logos.

I think the BM ones in there are clear and artistic, mind. Bornagar and Emperor have smashing logos. Christophe Szpajdel is a great artist.

If they are not "pure" blackmetal then they are sell outs!!! Reference: Random moaning immature teenagers on internet on band forums with too much time to themselves

And I bet they all have lots of pointless widdling solos that no-one can hear because the mids are scooped to f***.

:)

I still can only see the 'tus' in prosanctus inferi or whatever that one was meant to be, and that's after reading what it's meant to be.... Pointless.

Roo, its clear you simply don't understand metal. Why not get a nice Telecaster and play some Wings covers?

^ This.  The last two are completely illegible.

I do like the Borknagar logo (although I'd probably have had trouble reading it too if I hadn't heard of them)

To me, a proper black metal guitar tone is not about scooped mids. And it's never been about endless solos.

I must confess to neither knowing, nor giving one solitary sh!t about these mostly arbitrary, and utterly pointless sub-sub-sub-genre classifications that metal fans/bands seem to have arrived at. Great way to make sure your audience is as small as possible.

But black metal is hardly "sub-sub-sub". It's a hugely varied scene (or certainly far more so than the other big extreme-metal subgenres of thrash, death metal and doom) and its "trademarks" as you described only really exist in a tiny handful of its adherents.

I don't see the need for descriptors like "progressive-blackened-dark-ambient" (which I HAVE seen), but I don't get people's aversions to names for large and pretty loose genres to give people a ballpark idea of what something will sound like. Otherwise recommending bands would be a total pain in the arse and writing reviews would be near impossible.

I mean, essentially what you've done is made an remark about perceived hallmarks of a genre, which are incorrect, had that challenged then reacted with "I'd rather be ignorant of what constitutes a genre 'cause then it's easier to make disparaging quips"!

But black metal is hardly "sub-sub-sub".

I must admit, I thought exactly the same on first reading Roo's post.

I'm not at all into pigeonholing bands into all these silly little sub-genres, but "black metal" is a pretty broad term which has been around for a very long time.

Having said that, I wouldn't have a clue how to "define" it, and I wouldn't be confident of naming many bands who play it - beyond Venom and Bathory (I'll probably get lambasted now for mentioning even those two!)
