For the sake of their friendship, I have never spoken out about it.

Some very strong and commendable values there - not sure if I would handle it with good grace though!

When my first (and only proper) band split up it was an email from the singer with a massive ego. Basically it said "we decided to break it up as we weren't being serious enough about it". This can be translated as "I want you out of the band as you have said that you aren't willing to give up every Saturday for a 5 hour rehearsal". Shortly after this our bass player tried to find a compromise as he knew I was good for the band (solid player, nothing flashy and that's what our music needed). He organised a "free" session for me to go and try a new studio out. What he hadn't told me was that he had also invited the singer and that he had kept us both in the dark about the others appearances. The singer bought along a guitarist who wanted to be louder than everyone else. The session went ahead but was total sh!t - I agreed to play a few songs but was very miffed when this new guy had restructured the songs that I had put a lot of time and effort into and had written loads of w@nky guitar solos into places where they just did not fit. He also had a faulty valvetronix with an inordinate amount of hiss, this didn't help the situation at all.

The only satisfaction I had is that we were pretty decent for a while, had some regular gigs and then when I left the band and singer disappeared from the local music scene. He is still looking for a guitarist and has asked me back a few times.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Thanks but I am no angel. I just thought that enough damage had been done- no need to add to it.

Then walk up to him and kick him in the knackers, not a lot of damage, just a bit.  :D

OK - so having avoided the singer for a while now, I just got a call from him desperate for me to rejoin the band.

Much apologising, much humble pie eaten.

We're going to go for a beer - all the original band - and have a good old chat about what happened, and if we can make it work again.

I hope we can.  We were a pretty good band.

Mark.

Interesting development, very interesting...

If it looks like it really is all coming back together, make sure you (personally) know why you're doing it, what compromises you might or might not be making, how much you trust the other buggers, whether you need to, etc, etc...

In other words, try to make sure you know it's what you want and why.

Hope it works out well for you :D

Good luck Mark, hope it works out ok for you all. Personally I'm not sure if I'd "take him back" as I would worry about it happening all over again.

Yeah best wishes from me too. I think it important to make sure that the air is cleared and all niggles are taken care of before any commitments are made- speaking from experience anyway. It may even be the making of the band.

Definitely clearing the air - beer first, music later.

The things that frustrated him before will still be there...

We'll see.  Don't want to be let down by them again.  But my guard is up!

So!

I've been kicked out again.  That's definitely it this time, not going back if asked.

Singer reckons that we're too different musically.  I've taken that to mean that he's actually been advertising for another guitarist all this while, and he's now managed to find one.

You're right, PQ...

Yeah, I've been meeting up with the singer at his house, going through new material.

Been going OK, but there have been a few flashpoints - I wanted to be a little more adventurous, get away from the middle of the road sound that we were settling into, but a little more dissonnance in there...  He wanted to keep it a little more "polite".  Also, he was keen on getting a keyboard player, which I didn't really like the idea of.

Shame - I thought we were better mates than that.  But there you go.

Edit - Hmmm... apparently we weren't that good mates - he's just un-friended me on Facebook!  Again!!!
