First mix of my bands new song
« on: January 16, 2006, 01:52:42 PM »
Hi guys. Past week or so we have been working on our bands demo. Its all been at home using a laptop, DFH2 and an Mbox. We are a metal band with influences from Sikth, Tool, Opeth, Dream Theater, Between the Buried and me etc etc.

Any comments or critism would be appreciated, whether it be the mix playing or whatever. Thanks for your time

cheers

Dez

just out of interest, what guitar did you use? did you use bkp's- if so which ones?

im not familiar with the software you mentioned (at least i think its software anyway lol) but i guess you recorded it with no amp and just used models/modelling???

An Mbox is a USB soundcard which also comes free with Pro Tools software ( fast becoming the most used music editing software ). DFH2 is Drum Kit from Hell 2, which allows you to program drums.

I used an Ibanez RGT 2020 loaded with calibrated Nailbombs. All tones were from the POD XT which isnt ideal, but i am fairly happy with the tones i got.

ah right cool. yer i looked up your 2020 after you mentioned it in one of your other posts. i hadnt heard you play then and there's so many ibanez' that are like rg14232189738 or zr458943598745 and so on and so forth so i thought it might be just an average ibanez- but wow it's really nice!!! neck-through which is excellent.

anyway i dont really know why i just said all that....

but yer well done like i said before nice stuff.

You guys are certainly accomplished musicians, that's for sure. I listened to your track on my computer and had a bunch of suggestions, but I'm now listening to it via headphones and it sounds quite different, so I'm downloading the track and I'll burn it to CD and take it downstairs to my stereo to get an idea from that.

Rightio, here's what I hear as far as critique goes:

1. I'd give the singer a bit more studio grease. His voice is pretty dry. It could stand being turned up a bit too.

2. The bass volume is lower than I'd like.

3. The lead guitar overlaps with the vocals big time. Either change the panning a bit, EQ them so they don't share the same frequencies as much, drop the volume on the lead guitar when the singer is singing, or a combination of all of this. In fact, the lead guitar is too center-mixed for my liking regardless of the vox.

4. Some of the sweeps at the end might be a bit out of time. It could be me though.

So there are my initial impressions. It's really intense music and not the kind of thing that I listen to, although I can tell that you guys know your instruments well.
