which pickups? (with a twist!)
« on: January 17, 2006, 04:39:36 PM »
ok so the twist isn't that big i just put that there to make everyone read this lol hehehe.

!!!!!!!!!!(SKIP TO END IF YOU CAN'T BE ARSED TO READ THIS)!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway i just bought a rose morris avon or avon rose morris, what ever you want to call it, les paul copy for £40. HOWEVER, it has no pickups, no bridge, no machineheads, no electronics e.t.c e.t.c. basically, it's just the body and neck (oh and the tailpiece as well).

now... i ordered my BKP-92 with tap (its a '92 with the wind of a '90 as well) last week, so now i'm looking for a pair of humbuckers, that will contrast my new p-90, to put in the rose morris.

the twist (or problem lol) is that i don't really know what the p-90 is gonna sound like yet, or even what it's meant to sound like. you see when i ordered it i asked Tim for a pickup that could cut through in the mix of my band, with the other guitarist using a cr@ppy marshall (avt-50 to be precise). the one thing i DIDN'T ask tim, was what exactly the '92 and '90 are meant to sound like, but to be honest i don't care because i didn't/don't have a particular sound in mind. i'm sure by now, some of you clever clogs will have realised the situation. for those stupid fools who can't understand my clear explanation ( ) here's a simplified version:
i want the humbuckers to contrast with the p-90 but i'm not sure what the p-90 is gonna sound like. i know what some of you are saying now......
your saying "what an idiot, i mean whichever h/b's he picks, they're gonna sound completely different to the p-90!"

i know this, but i want the h/b's COMPLETELY different to the p-90------ complete other end of the sound spectrum. this is because i'm only 14 and simply can't afford to have loads of guitars, each one catering for a specific sound. so basically in the end it all comes down to the next sentance, and you really didn't need to read that stupid waffling you just ploughed through lol, here we go:

what combination of humbuckers, in a rose morris avon les paul copy, will provide the total opposie sound to my bkp-92 with a tap???? now i don't mind if this h/b combo is heavy metal or good ol' vintage but it needs to clash with the sound of my p-90.

APOLOGY: i am genuinely sorry for the ridiculous amounts of writing and most of it is a load of cr@p. i've probably repeated myself about 1000,0000 times and still haven't conveyed my point very clearly. having said that, i do think i should win an award for longest post ever- i mean come on i've basically written an essay!!!

Miracle Man and Warpig are probably the biggest contrast to P90. I wouldn't say they clash, tho. Some have combined a Warpig in the bridge with a MQ in the neck with great results. I have both these pickups but not in the same guitar but I can see how they would work together.

I've been on this forum too long.

10 years of tinkering with guitars also helps a little. As soon as I f**k up and say someting wrong, Feline, R2e or Tim will come to the rescue.

When I was a youngster I watched alot of English and American movies. Movies in Holland are all subtitled, so I learned quickly at a young age. They also teach English at school overhere and I have to say I excelled at it. A couple of years ago my Canadian relatives stayed over for 5 weeks wich also helped alot. Later, when I was studying Economy, I had English classes given by an actual Brit. It was the first time I had a real challenge. But the teacher complimented me on my pronounciation.

The thing that impresses me about Ratty is not only his English but the way he has caught the Brit humour. Many of his one-liners have had me laughing.

Since I have a good selection of BK's, including a tapped MQ, I'm going to give you 5 choices which I think will contrast nicely with the P-90.

1 - Mules - nice fat HB sound, all the classic tones
2 - Black Dogs - darker, more mid and drive.  If you like Page, then these are the ones
3 - Abraxas IV - totally different to a P-90, almost a compressed tone with a lot of drive, just think of the classic Santana sound
4 - Cold Sweats - great clean sounds and a ton of sustain, not as organic as an alnico HB, but they would be a great contrast to the P-90.
5 - new HolyDiver - this is an incredible pickup, it wants to feedback so much, but bring down the volume and they clean up really well.  They also give great split sounds.

Lots of choices, but that's what you wanted.  If you give some songs you like the guitar tones on, then I am sure that everyone here will help you pinpoint them more.
So many pickups, so little time
