Well... quick update (just to get back on track hahaha... it's okay, I actually learned a little)...

Today turned into a new guitar day!  Went back to the shop to show the J5 to my girlfriend... and believe it or not, she actually approved.  So I gave the shop an offer they couldn't refuse, and I am now the proud owner of a shiny new J5 Telecaster (and not the Squire version either).
I really like the headstock, though it's better with 12 machine heads.

It's the rest of the guitar I think looks rubbish. Black Fenders with silver scratchplates all look rubbish in my book.

The headstock is actually really growing on me as well... my other Tele is starting to look like it's missing something lol.  And I agreed totally with the chromed out pickguard being a little too much... so I also got a black with white 3 ply pickguard... which looks pretty sweet with the white binding around the body.

AND... just to make this completely relevant to the BKP forums... a BKP battle worn Aftermath is going in the bridge tomorrow!!!  :D

Excellent - I nearly bought one of these a few years back. I'm a tele traditionalist but LOVED the headstock. The only thing I wasn't too sure about was the difference in output between the pickups and the lack of pickup selector. Had I been a bit more mature (sort of like I am now) I would have realised that I could have chosen some suitable aftermarket pickups and blended the volumes of them together to make some wonderful sounds.
I think I hate being indecisive.

That's pretty much all I look for now is how comfortable it feels and the build quality... electronics can always be changed out.  It's also a good way to get to know your guitar and really figure out what kind of modifications you want to do to it.

As far as the pickups go... I'm really digging this Fender Twisted Tele neck pickup.  It's a good blend of traditional and modern... not quite as dark as most Tele necks and very clear.  I may think about swapping in a Yardbird neck in the future...

For the bridge, the Fender Enforcer pickup sounds pretty good for the high gain stuff... and being that I am primarily a metal player, it's actually not bad... could be a little tighter and more percussive, but that's why I'll be swapping in an Aftermath bridge p'up in a couple of hours.

There's a reason for that headstock: behind the nut bends.

Saw a video of J5's Tele collection. The man could start a museum.

Nice guitar man. I like it a lot

Although if you got a good deal, you could afford to buy a little saw and chop the ugly bit off the headstock
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Probably my most watched video on youtube! It gets my pulse racing every time I watch it.
