Guitar switching
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:52:19 AM »
I know this exists, I just don't know what to look for that will do the job, perform well and be a good price.

I change between guitars during a gig, depending on the song we're playing and at the moment I unplug one guitar and then transfer the wire into the new one. I'd rather have both guitars plugged into a pedal at the start of my chain so I can simply press a button to determine which guitar is active. I'm guessing this is called something like an A/B box or A/B/Y box as I seem to recall reading about them before but I can't find such a product at the moment as I'm not sure what it's actually called or who makes them.

lehle or this one (adds a passive volume pot so you can dial down the hotter of the two guitars if you wish):

The Lehle's are classics. Radial has a nice one too, so has Toadworks.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

All good recommendations, but even Boss make something that would get the job done (although I usually steer people away from Boss)
When I try to use it to switch between amps, it creates a ground loop, but I would assume you won't have this problem when using it to switch guitars.

Cost is certainly a factor here and I assume that Boss will be plentiful on Ebay. I found a Boss LS-2 that sounds like it is the same idea as the AB-2 but I have no idea how good it is.

The LS-2 is a loop selector, and will probably be overkill if you just want to switch between two guitars.

One thing to remember : if you switch guitars, be careful with your cables, because it's very easy to pull them off the stand...

you just need an A/B box, all these suggestions are WAY overkill.

heres a wiring layout - you could make one for £20, easy - there is probably someone on ebay selling bare-bones A/B switches for around the same price.

I bought an A/B switch from a guy on Ebay who makes them to order. I'll try & get his details as it was inexpensive and works a treat.

They need to be a little clever when you switch between amps to prevent ground loops. Switching between guitars however is an absolute doddle.
