real ales, shout out for Jarrow Brewery...
« on: October 24, 2011, 07:05:17 PM »
I'm sure there are plenty of real ale types on this board; like me.

My local is also a brewery and I'm lucky enough to have this stuff rather than the soulless bitters like John Smiths.

Ah a topic very close to my heart. So this is my local:

http://thecraftbeerco.com/ so there's a fair bit of choice :)

and my current favourite London brewery is The Kernel Brewery, their IPAs are the absolute business:

Redemption brewery is currently the trendy one in London. Lucky, since they make a very nice drop:

here in Ireland, micro/local breweries are virtually non existent.  there actually is one about 12 miles from me that does lovely beers, but not one pub within 30 miles stocks it!  basically, the pubs here do Guinness, Bass or Smithwicks, Harp or Tennants, and usually Carlsberg or Budweiser.  that's about it.  the only place i can get any faintly unusual beers is, slightly bizarrely, Tesco or Sainsbury.  even with such a small variety, most of the pubs do absolutely awful pints.  tastes like neat alcohol in dyed water!

whenever i go over to England i always try as many of the local brews as i can.  always enjoy that :)

I'm very partial to a good ale (and a good wine, Philly), and a good sherry (a real man's drink), a good whisky (Deanston's for me), and a good... oh you get the idea.
Not too far from the Wychwood brewery here, I do like my Hobgoblin, though it's getting a bit commercialised nowadays.
Always on the lookout for new and interesting beers (and wines, and... oh you get the idea). :)

A name I know well, despite being a southern softy - there's a long-established Sam Smith's pub, The Cittie of Yorke, just down the road from where I've worked the last 25 years.

That's about 5 minutes from my flat and you're right,  it's a lovely pub. They have some other amazing pubs in London, especially The Princess Louise on High Holborn.

Despite Sam Smiths being a chain, which I should despise.. the beer is good, the food is alright, and the price is right!
