I find it hard to believe that nobody in the management/friends told them this would be a $%&#ing terrible idea. Perhaps they were just too afraid to say no to Lou Reed.
This is just conjecture, but I'd have thought the project would've been driven by Metallica - or more specifically
Lars Ulrich - rather than by Lou Reed.
I can't imagine Reed really giving a sh!t about working with Metallica, but I can definitely imagine Lars getting all worked up about how hip-and-cool it would be to work with Reed. Then presumably the other three just went along with it.
