I have only heard the stories from people who saw it.

I don't wanna see it, I don't wanna hear it.

Same goes for the previous album that is compressed to death and makes your CD player clip.

Somebody should lock Metallica into a studio with a good producer and don't let 'em out untill they have made something that rivals the black album.

Anyway, they made St Anger - how much lower could they go?

St Anger is a masterpiece compared to lulu.

And, yeah, the later performance was better in every way than the album. I think with it being  live, and reed being in the same room at the same time as the music, it was harder for him to be out of tune and out of time, and whomever did the sound obviously didnt understand how utter dreadful the mix was supposed to be.

Something that just struck me - Robert Trujillo has only appeared on Metallica albums which are shite.  Which isn't to say I think it's his fault!  It would be nice if he could record something decent with them during his time in the band.

If you watched most of the death magnetic production clips Rob actually wrote at least a good 50% of the riffs on death magnetic.

And to be honest if you listen the demo version when it has all the harmonies in for guitars & even vocals its not that bad.

But for some reason it was all removed from the actual album and everything was sped up and about 3 minutes added to each song which just made them drag.

I actually dont have the album itself on my mp3 player just the demo magnetic cd that came with it as its miles better even the production which was before rick rubin got his grubby hands on it

I may be in the minority, but I actually like Death Magnetic...  And Load.

MOP is still my favourite though - still play it loads.

Thanks Tony.  I think I have the CD with the demos, but never listened to it!

Its far better. Other than the sketchy transitions here and there which are kinda expected on demos

That'd be a low benchmark to set.

Metallica are lost to the world. Too much money = too many Yes-Men and too few people who'll tell them they're making rubbish.

I love the scene in Some Kind of Monster where Lars Dad reaction to some of the music is pretty frosty.
I think I hate being indecisive.

Nah the high point is clearly Kirk's facepalm.

I really feel sorry for Kirk, he just wants to sit around and play guitar and watch Hammer movies and he has these buffoons to deal with.

The single best thing that could have happened to Metallica is that when James went into rehab, he didn't come back and the band split. For the following reasons:

St. Anger is painful to listen to. It's a therapy jam session. It really didn't need to be recorded. The problem you had that Bob Rock was so stoked to be playing bass for them that he forgot his duty to tell them when they were turning out turds. Booting Jason was also a mistake. Instead of acting like grown-ups and bringing him back they all behaved like children.

Death Magnetic, the production is so bad it's almost unlistenable. Lars on the documentary for it is saying something like 'yeah that's awesome'. Dude, it is not. you're deaf, get a producer who isn't a lazy stoner ####!! who just pushes all the sliders to 11.

Lulu, if this isn't just Lar's vanity project I don't know what is. James, serial Skynyrd fan, not going to be into Reed. Kirk just wants to play guitar in a band and the new bassist doesn't want to piss off the band after they just made him a millionaire.

Lars can't drum for shiteee. I mean seriously, the guy is done.

Kirk, sadly I get the impression most of the time that he'd rather be surfing.

Rob, new guy and great musician, but has no voice in the band and certainly can't do die, die, die, die, die, mother$%&#er,die anywhere near as awesomely as Jason could.

Then we have new less sweary, much more sober James. Who seems to have given over full control of the band to Lars to $%&# with. Which is a bad thing as Lars is a massive tool.

Nope the best thing that could have happened is that they ended before St. Anger with an intact legacy. James would have then been free to go and screw around making music with his buddy Pepper (which would be awesome). Really couldn't give a shiteee what Lars did and Kirk could go surfing.

^  Wow, great post!

Can't argue with any of it.   Your point about Bob Rock is so true - he basically let himself think he was part of the band and forgot to maintain his professional distance, with disastrous consequences.

I would add I'm glad James did his therapy/rehab, I'm sure he's in a much better place personally now, which is great.  I don't know if that added to Metallica's decline or if it might've just happened anyway, but perhaps it would've been best if the band had just called it a day.
