Small versatile amp for small gigs
« on: November 26, 2011, 12:52:36 PM »
Currently I'm using a Fender Blues Junior for the smaller gigs we do. It sounds nice on low volumes, but at soon as turn everyting a bit up, the topend gets too bright and thin when I play singlecoils. When I use the fatknob it's gets a bit mushy on the lowend and I need big cleans for a lot of songs. Btw, the BJ sounds better with IT's then MM's.

I'm thinking to sell it and buy something compact with (just a bit, bigger venues are the domain of my Orange Rockerverb 50. ) more power and weight behind the tone. I'm considering the Tubemeister 18 combo, but is has only a 10 inch speaker and I'm afraid it will sound wimpy at higher levels. The cab that comes with the TM-head has a 12 inch V30. Point is the combo comes with reverb and the head not. Ok, that could be solved with a pedal, but will cost extra. I read on the net the two channels are difficult to balance when you set them both for their sweet spots. Cleans could be a bit too spanky too. I want round clean tones. Any experience here?

Also looking at the Orange Thunder 30 combo. Again, this one will need a reverbpedal too.  I like the sound of the TH30, played it a bit in a shop, though at lower volumes. I will need to pump it up on stage, cause the drummer can play loud at times (he was between 2002 and 2006 the drummer of Epica - sic). Any opinions on this one? Will the cleanchannel keep a round tone at higher volumes? Are the channels balanced? I need to switch a lot.

Any other suggestions? Thx guys!

I'll say that the reverb is the least of your problems as there's plenty of pedal options here. From the title of the post I was going to suggest the Egnater Tweaker, but I understand that you need a two channel amp. The Tweaker 40 might be worth checking out, but maybe it's too close to your Rockerverb 50 power-wise.

I use a Cornford Hurricane... my favorite sounding amp ever.

I prefer twochannel, but it is not a must. Package should be small. I'm in a band with seven players and there is often little space on stage. Clean headroom is important too.

I will look into this one. Point is you (nearly) can't get them in Holland and for service I want to buy it in a musicshop. Price is bit higher then I was aiming at.

I bought mine from Station Music in Germany. I'll just take it to my regular tech if it starts acting up I guess...
Never realised you were in Holland. Howdy, neighbor :)

Sehr gut, danke! Yeah, you are right, maybe it's not too big a deal to buy it online. I remember you reviewed the Carvin. I want something with big vintage cleans en classic to hardrock drive. More plexi then Mesa if you get me :-)

I'm your neighbour from the south

The Carvin has a sound of its own. It doesn't really do Fender, Marshall or Mesa tones. But I have mine set up for clean, hard rock and metal. All available with a single tap on the footswitch. It's a very flexible amp. The lead boost is the cherry on the cake.

I think I understand what you're saying even though I don't speak the language (Seems like Dutch to me, but I might be wrong)  :)
