Fender Super-Sonic
« on: January 30, 2006, 07:55:46 PM »
The story sounds pretty promissing. From vintage clean to modern hi gain. Has anyone tried it already?

As soon as it's in the shops overhere, I want to try it.

Here's the link for more info: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=2160500000

Any opinions from the amp gurus on this forum?

I have no doubt it will sound good on the clean channels. The dirty channels have a cascading pre-amp, just like Mesa Boogie. I wonder if it will sound like one. If the amp sounds like I always wished it would, Fender has answered my prayers.

hmmm it sounds like a jack-of-all-trades amp. i'd be surprised if it could genuinely be as good as a dual rectifier in terms of high-gain. Fender aren't exactly known for their high gain amps.

And Dual Rectifier is not my idea of good higain, so let's see how that thing turns out before bashing it :) (I've nothing against DR, I just don't like the sound)

Dual Rectifiers are a one trick pony but they do what they do very well. The trouble is the term "high gain" means different things to different people. I still stand by my views about Fender's high gain compared with other brands like ENGL etc.

I can understand that. They are much cheaper than Mesa's in Europe and more versatile. I'm not surprised they are more popular than Marshalls in the US when you look at the prices. I've not decided what amp I want next - I may start saving for a Diezel Herbert when I get my next job.

Well I personnaly think Marshall had only done commercial cr@p since 20 years. The last good Marshall for me is the JCM800 even if JCM2000 is not so bad in its various form. They do some great reissue too but far too much money for what it is.
For a Marshall kind of tone I prefer a good all tube Laney :)
For me Engl got the perfect tone, it's not just a matter of price. I'll still prefer my Engl rig over a pricey Bogner for its sound :)

ENGL +1

i love my fireball.

Those herberts are very expensive and have looooooooooads of tweakability...but id go for a SAVAGE SE instead for that price range i love the ENGL sound that no other amp can quite capture :)

That Fender sounds good on paper, but for $1500 its gotta compete with Framus, Mesa, Engl etc.. it will have to be the best thing ever to do that :P

totally agree. not sure about Laney's as I've never owned one.

I know the Herbert is expensive, but obviously I will play the Engl before I decide what to buy. Splawn are on the list also.

I don't think that Fender will be able to compete with hand-built amps like the Engl, Dual Rectifier etc. The Metalhead hasn't had much success - they should have looked at the Mode 4 which also hasn't done that well.

Hmmm, I wonder if it comes in tweed?

Looks like it's going to be ok at lots but great at nothing. But time will tell...
